HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-01-24 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, African American history is a very large part of American history and should be studied throughout the year and since 1976, February has been designated as a month in which especially memorable events should be recognized and celebrated; and Whereas, Iowa City can count among its past and present residents many African American leaders, educators, and social justice pioneers with state, national and international historical prominence, including Frederick Wayman "Duke" Slater, Estella Louise Ferguson, Phillip G. Hubbard, Emlen Lewis Tunnell, Helen Lemme, and others; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City continues to work toward becoming a more inclusive community in which all residents, past, present, and future, are respected and recognized for their contributions and potential contributions to our community, the state, the country, and the world. Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of February 2012 as BLACK HISTORY MONTH in the City of Iowa City and urge all to commit to working toward the ideals of equality, freedom, and opportunity that our country represents.
