In addition to my legal background, I was a reporter for the Cedar Rapids Gazette. For seyer years I rued on the
City of Iowa City's City Council and other governmental functions.
WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDRE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD?
Other than reporting on the allocation of DBG funds in the past, and recently reading its specific charge as well as
reviewing the minutes of the past several meetings, I would not consider myself an expert on the the board's
decisions. What I lack in immediate knowledge (which is a situation fairly easily remedied) I would certainly make up
for in dedication to the board's activities.
WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS CAN YOU MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD (REASON FORAPPLYING)?
believe that my perspective as someone working in the labor movement comports well with the mission of the board.
I understand in a very real way, and see on a daily basis, the issues and challenges facing low and moderate income
workers. The concerns of those covered by collective bargaining contracts are little different than those of all hard
working Iowa City residents. Their jobs and the conditions of those jobs affect every aspect of their lives. Additionally,
their family situations (including housing) have a genuine impact on how they are able to do their jobs. Neither exists

What is your present knowledge of this advisory board?
The Housing and Community Development Commission accesses the needs of residents of Iowa City in
the low to moderate income bracket. Members seek to understand the perspective of low to moderate
income residents and advocates on behalf of their concerns. The commission also reviews policies and
procedures related to housing and services for low to moderate income residents and makes
recommendations to City Council for programs, policy changes, and use of public funds. The most
integral aspect of the Housing and Community Development Commission is to include the voice of the
low to moderate income population in the process and raise awareness of housing and community
development issues throughout Iowa City.
What contributions can you make to this advisory board?
I would bring a unique perspective to the Housing and Community Development Commission with my
interest and experience in community organizing and dialogue. Dialogue allows people of different
backgrounds to talk honestly about public issues and learn from each other's experience. It can serve as a
foundation for public action and facilitate shared knowledge, resources, and decision - making. I am a
trained facilitator and organizer in the Everyday Democracy model of dialogue. I applied this model to
various community- oriented dialogue projects and brought together diverse groups of people to address
shared issues of concern.
While in Colorado Springs, I worked with our local community centers to better understand the needs and
assets of the populations being served. We formed a task force comprised of neighborhood leaders and
community center clientele to find solutions to budget shortfalls. The Community Center Task Force was
successful in keeping the Colorado Springs community centers open and the city transitioned to a new
model of governance and funding for the centers.
I believe in the power of community and want to contribute my passions to a commission that works to
improve Iowa City for all its residents. Understanding the needs, interests, and opinions of the members
of our community in the low to moderate income bracket is an important step in the change process.
