HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-21-2003 ICPD Reports/Memos Department Memorandum 02 57 DATE: December 10, 2002 TO: Chief Winkelhake Ali Commanders FROM: Captain Widmer SUBJECT: September & October Use of Force Review The bi-monthly "Use of Force Review Committee met on December 6, 2002. It was composed of the following personnel; Captain Widmer Sgt. Brotberton Sgt. Hurd Sgt. Krei The review o f the submitted reports for September ( 18 incidents-25 reports) and October (36 incidents-29 reports) revealed one policy clarification and one training concern. Included with these incidents are four animal destruction. As a matter of policy clarification, in incidents where more than one officer draws their firearm (felony traffic stop, subject with a weapon) and no hands-on occurs, only one Use of Force Report needs to be filled out listing all officers involved. Drawn weapon only may be handled in the same way building search and SRT incidents are documented, As a part of training, insure officers are familiar with the recommended projectile placement when using their firearms to destroy injured animals. See Sgt. Hurd if you need the prior watch training on destroying animals. It appears that some of the new officers may need some training in this area. Needing to be repeated this report, the use of force report is to be short, but enough information must be given so that the reports can stand alone in just'flying the force used. Encourage officers to ensure this is being done.
