Back to School Event (Wahls)
3) Adjournment
NEXT MEETING: May 3, 3:30 PM
Summer of Arts
Hannah Green and Michelle Han
Goal
To raise cultural awareness in general and to give participants a better
understanding of the culture of the country we will be representing (Sudan).
With the recent negative exposure of Sudan, the YAC will try to show a different
side of Sudan the students may not be able to learn about otherwise.
Activities/Projected Costs
Henna Painting
Since henna painting is a large part of Sudanese culture, it may be
interesting to allow the kids to create their own henna designs. While it may not
be the most practical to have real henna, seeing examples of henna and creating
new designs can be a fun way to learn something new.
Costs: $10 (markers/fine tipped pens)
Fla Cg olorin~(or Create your own fla,~)
With this activity, participants will be able to either color/ paint a
Sudanese flag, or create their own country flag using the given "guide" to flag
colors. The subcommittee will do some research to find what various colors of
countries' flags mean to make a guide the children can use.
Costs: $40 (paint, brushes, chopsticks, etc)
StorXbook (folklore) Coloring
To expose the participants to amore global folklores, they can color a given
story booklet with a folklore story inside. To make this more interesting, the
book can me made with only an outline of a certain character so the participants
can draw/make their own character tb cut out and perhaps "velcro" in the
outlines while reading the book.
Costs: $15-50 (basic coloring supplies -more elaborate design z~~ith cut outs, velcro, etc)
<Total projected costs: $65 -100>

Carnival Proposal
Goals:
Provide a welcoming, enjoyable atmosprere for K-7 youth.
The Plan:
Utilize Lower City Park, providing food a~d games to kids to create a sense of
community. The food menu could incline hotdogs, burgers, ice cream and assorted
fruits and vegetables. Parents could be encouraged to bring dishes of their own if they
are so inclined. Gamjes could include activities as simple as Ultimate Frisbee, softball or
pickup soccer, as there is plenty of openl, space in the vicinity. We should also examine
the possibility of rending City Pool for the evening to allow for free admittance for
participants. Possiblle dates include Frid~y August 14th, Saturday August 15tH
Food could be catered if the money is a ailable, but could be bought in bulk and grilled
if we so chose. This jwould give us a littl~ bit more flexibility in how much food we
provide based on turnout. Food bought' in bulk from Hy Vee or Fareway wouldn't be too
expensive and Lowed City park has the gills needed for said grilling. Ice cream could be
bought in the mann$r it is for the elementary ice cream socials.
Games would also b~ simple to organizej. It wouldn't be hard for YAC members to
provide a few Frisbees of our own along with other simple game accessories of the sort.
If we so wished, purchasing these items would not be expensive. (Then perhaps
donating them to a s'~chool like Roosevel}?)
Renting the pool world probably be sorr~ewhat more difficult, as it would certainly cost
money, but would alto act as a powerfu~ advertising tool.
