Karr mentioned that the city will be initiating a rezoning project for the old Press Citizen building for the IC Community School District. It was also reported that the city is doing a lighting project in the northern downtown district and looking to extend the downtown district across Burlington Street. Council also had one of its Neighborhood Associations on Melrose ask that commercial activities be banned on the street. Wilburn stated that Council did not seek to ban activities but in return asked staff to take a look at possibilities for allowing commercial activity to occur legally with certain guidelines in place to insure safety. Due to the request, Council is searching for possible methods to eliminate the trash that accumulates on Melrose. Such methods include new trash receptacles. MEETING SCHEDULE: The Commission set a date for their next meeting, Sunday, July 10 at 4:00 PM. Tamerius motioned to adjourn, which was seconded by Lincoln. Preparation: -Make mock rainforest, include a body of water and trees with various branches for the animals to hang off of, it also helps if you make a few animals of your own to place in the rainforest beforehand. Make sure people know it's supposed to be the rainforest; it helps to make a sign. -Make fact cards about the plant and animals in Brazil; make sure they're able to stand on their own. - Get volunteers! Apply for some through the Summer of the Arts. -It would be cool to make a CD of Brazilian music or rainforest sounds to play at the booth Booth Set Up: - Attach mock rainforest to the back of the tent using bungee cords. -Tape the youth advisory banner to the front of the booth using tape. -Set out various animal cut out around the booth with fact cards near each too educate the kids in a more in -depth way about the animals of Brazil. -Have weights to help hold everything down on the table if it's windy. These weights can be anything from rocks you find on the ground near the booth to using the bags of markers. Submitted 6/14/11 by Leah Murray & Caroline Van Voorhis Subject to Approval YOUTH ADVISORY COMMISSION GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES Established in November of 2005, by Resolution #05 -371, the Iowa City Youth Advisory Commission consists of seven members appointed by the City Council. Resolution # 08 -344 amended the by -laws on December 2, 2008, and required that all members be currently enrolled in an Iowa City high school or high school equivalent. Four members shall represent City, Regina, Tate, and West high schools. The three remaining members shall be at large. All members of the Commission shall be residents of Iowa City, and staggered two year terms begin January 1. The Council shall choose one council member to serve as the Council liaison and one council member to serve as an alternate liaison. The Council liaison shall attend the Commission meetings. The mission of the Youth Advisory Commission is to promote understanding and awareness of Iowa City among Iowa City youth; allow a select group of youth to help,make deions concerning them cis and their peers; enable youth members to utilize and expand on their leadershi "abilities to serve as a mechanism for communication between youth and adults in lowa'City; and create a bridge whereon youth and adults can develop partnerships. The Iowa City Youth Advisory Commission will empower, engage, and.foster youth participation in its local community; more specifically to provide a "sounding board ";for youth issues affecting the Iowa City community youth.
