HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-05-01 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Johnson county includes 16,927 citizens aged 60 al J 1 er; u��u Whereas, communities throughout Johnson County are committed to helping all individuals maintain their 'health and independence in later life; and Whereas, the older adults in Iowa City have an important role in sharing knowledge, wisdom, and understanding of the history of our community through interactions with children, youth, and adults from other generations; and Whereas, their interactions with family, friends, and neighbors across generations enrich the lives of everyone involved; and Whereas, our community can provide opportunities to enrich citizens young and old by: • Emphasizing the value of including elders in public and family life • Creating opportunities for older Americans to interact with people of different generations • Providing services, technologies, and support systems that allow older adults to participate in social activities in the community Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa do hereby proclaim May 2012 to be Older Americans Month And urge every citizen to take time this month to engage with our older citizens through enjoyable social interactions such as sports, games, contests, and other forms of play. 1 ; Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 1 S` day of May, 2012. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the bicycle is an economical, environmentally sound, and effective means of transportation, recreation, and fitness; and Whereas, the bicycle is considered a legitimate vehicle in all 50 states and is entitled to legal and responsible use of all public roads in Iowa, except interstate highways; and Whereas, increased use of the bicycle will benefit all citizens by improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing use of and dependence upon finite energy resources and will foster healthy lifestyles; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City has an ongoing commitment to encourage bicycling as a viable mode of transportation and recreation; and Whereas, May 14 -18 has been declared National Bike to Work Week, and the City of Iowa City supports bicycling to work; and Whereas, the League of American Bicyclists has established the month of May as National Bicycle Month. Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2012 to be Bicycle Month in Iowa City, and encourage all citizens to ride their bicycles to work, to the store, to the park, and with friends and family to promote the benefits achieved from bicycling.
