The Human Relations Commission plans programs and activities, such as the recent event`Building Relationships and Creating Opportunity in the African American Community: A Panel of Parents and Youth of Color", in order to facilitate understanding between groups and work to eliminate tensions in our community. The commission raises critical ^1iestions related to human relations issues, such as such as racism, sexism, ableism, and heterosexism, and disseminates :ormation about civil rights and discrimination to the public. The commission also provides recommendations to City Council on necessary legislation related to issues of discrimination and cooperates with outside public and private agencies or organizations. What contributions can you make to this advisory board? I would bring a unique perspective to the Human Relations Commission with my interest and experience in community organizing and dialogue. Dialogue allows people of different backgrounds to talk honestly about public issues and learn from each other's experience. It can serve as a foundation for public action and facilitate shared knowledge, resources, and decision-making. I am a trained facilitator and organizer in the Everyday Democracy model of dialogue. I applied this model to various community-oriented dialogue projects and brought together diverse groups of people to address shared issues of concern. While in Colorado Springs,I worked with our local community centers to better understand the needs and assets of the populations being served. We formed a task force comprised of neighborhood leaders and community center clientele to find solutions to budget shortfalls. The Community Center Task Force was successful in keeping the Colorado Springs community centers open and the city transitioned to a new model of governance and funding for the centers. It is important for me to be an active and engaged member of my community and I am excited.about.tie opportunity to contribute time, energy, and passion to a commission that works to improve Iowa City for all its-residents.
