IOWA CRY /JOHNSON COIINfY SENIOR CENTER
Memorandum
To: Senior Center Commission
From: Craig Buhman, Maintenance Worker III
Re: Facility Report
Date: 17 July 17, 2012
The Linn Street Steps Repair project is nearly complete. The four limestone benches will
receive new pedestal bases before they are repositioned at the Linn Street access points. Once
the project is accepted as complete we will focus our efforts on re- energizing the heavily
stressed landscaping. Landscaping work may be coordinated with the much anticipated signage
project.
The Senior Center will close to the public on the 11th and 12th of August in order to allow
in -house maintenance to take place. The Assembly Room floor will be cleaned and re- sealed
during this scheduled closing. In addition, carpet extraction will be taking place throughout
much of the facility.
An unusual occurrence to relate; the construction of the multi - purpose facility to the
east of the Center coupled with the very warm and dry weather has allowed particulate matter
to remain airborne long enough to impact our air quality. The Center's lower roof area and
chiller were coated with, among the typical seasonal detritus, masonry dust. Filters at the air
handlers have functioned very well, trapping particulate matter, and have been replaced ahead
of schedule.

The Center
IOWA CITY /JOHNSON COUNT' SENIOR CENTER
A-uCa"L.7%10INin,
To: Senior Center Commission
From: Michelle Buhman, Program Specialist
Re: Program Report
Date: July 16, 2012
Program Committee Update:
The Program Committee elected new officers for 2012 -2013; Cari Malone Chair,
Lorraine Dorfman vice -chair and Gail Stika, secretary. At the July meeting,
committee members decided on class evaluation schedule for fall, discussed
potential programs for the Winter quarter and how to better publicize one -time
special events through SCTV.
New Programs and classes starting Fall
In May 2012, 1 successfully completed training for two evidence based programs,
Healthy Eating Every Day and Active Living Every Day. Both programs are
designed to help people make small behavioral changes to build a healthier life.
I plan to facilitate both courses at the Center this fall and winter. Once I have
completed leading both courses I will attend further training to become a
facilitator trainer. The end goal is to have peers teaching peers both of these
programs.
The fall program guide planning process is complete and the contents have been
sent to the publisher. This fall we have over 100 unique classes and programs in
addition to the ongoing groups and clubs. Save the date for the Membership
Appreciation Event, Sep. 13, the Mac and Cheese Fundraiser on Sep. 28, and
the Volunteer Recognition event on Oct. 25.
The Fall Program Guide will be published Aug. 15. Registration will start August
20. Members will be able to register as early at 7:30 AM (walk -in only) with
general registration staring at 8 AM.
