NOTICE
THE CITY COUNCIL OF IOWA CITY IS CONSIDERING APPOINTMENT TO THE FOLLOWING BOARD:
BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
One vacancy — Five -Year Term
January 1, 2013 — Ending January 1, 2018
Duties: In appropriate cases and subject to appropriate conditions and safeguards, the Board
may make special exceptions to the terms of the Zoning Chapter in harmony with the general purpose and
intent of the ordinance and in accordance with general or specific rules contained therein. The Board may
grant variances to the Zoning Chapter only in the case of "unnecessary hardship." The hardship must be
substantial, serious, real, and of compelling force, as distinguished from reasons of convenience,
maximization of profit or caprice. The Board may also hear and decide appeals where it is alleged there is
an error in any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by a City official in the enforcement of
the Zoning Chapter.
Iowa City appointed members of boards and commissions must be eligible electors of the City of
Iowa City. The Board meets the second Wednesday of each month at 5:00 p.m.
Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 16, 2013. The City of Iowa City
encourages diversity in the appointment of citizens to boards and commissions. Persons interested in
being considered should contact the City Clerk at City Hall, 410 E. Washington Street. Application forms
are available from the Clerk's office upon request or on the City website at www.icgov.org.

I have an MS degree in urban planning with an emphasis in land use and the environment. A 20 -year resident, I am
familiar with development, zoning, and historic preservation issues in Iowa City. I have more than 15 years of
experience in media relations /communications. In my M.S. degree studies, internships and work for Johnson and
Linn counties, I have worked with zoning codes /maps, the site review process and comp /district plans.
/HAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD?
I am familiar with how the board differs from the Planning and Zoning Commission, including its focus on special
exceptions, variances and appeals, and use of findings of fact/conclusions of law. I know applications range from
requests regarding a feature of a building to the very existence of a building /use. As a planning intern with the City of
Iowa City (May - November 2011), 1 attended several staff meetings where Board of Adjustment cases were
discussed.
WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS CAN YOU MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD REASON FOR APPLYING)?
Board of Adjustment applications obviously matter to the individual applicant but can impact neighbors or the
community at large in positive and /or negative ways. I am known for being fair, attentive and ethical in weighing facts
and making interpretations to arrive at a decision.
