Hubbard, Emlen L. Tunnell and Helen Lemme; and . Whereas, the City of Iowa City strives to be an inclusive community in which all citizens, past, present, and future, are respected and recognized for their contributions and potential contributions to our community. Now, Therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the month of February 2013 as African American History Month in the City of Iowa City, and urge all to commit to pursuing the ideals of equality, freedom, and opportunity that our community represents. Hayek Signe m Iowa City, Iowa, this 19tk day of February, 21 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, members of the Ioway Tribe and their ancestors were the ste over 60,000 square miles, including most or all of what is known as the State of Iowa, for nearly 1,000 years; and WHEREAS, the Ioway Tribe has made significant cultural and historical contributions to Iowa, the Midwest, and the United States of America; and WHEREAS, the Ioway and all other Native American tribes were removed from the territory before Iowa became a state; and WHEREAS, the State of Iowa is named for the Ioway Tribe; and WHEREAS, Iowans are generally unaware of the historical and present -day existence and contributions of the Ioway Tribe; and WHEREAS, two new historical documentary films entitled "Lost Nation: The Ioway 2 &3" will premiere at the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History in Iowa City on February 23, 2013; and WHEREAS, members of the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma and the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska will be present for the premiere; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim Saturday, February 23, 2013, to be IOWAY CITY DAY in Iowa City and urge all citizens to attend the premiere event and learn the story of the ancestral homeland of the Native People who gave our state its name. Mayor Signed in Id this 19' day City, Iowa, February, 20 `a City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION gas, Sertoma International, a civic organization, thf which is "Service to Mankind," has adopted a Freedom Week Program dedicated to the emphasis of the values and responsibilities of people in a democracy; and Whereas, Sertoma International has promoted the distribution of copies of the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence throughout its entire membership of Clubs; and Whereas, the Old Capitol Sertoma Club of Iowa City and Coralville supports Freedom Week through its National Heritage Essay Contest, an essay contest for Eighth Grade students in Johnson County designed to emphasize and educate students on responsibilities of citizens in a democracy; and Whereas, it seems proper and fitting to accord official recognition to Sertoma's Freedom Week. Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim and designate the week of February 24th5 2013 to be: SERTOMA -S FREEDOM WEEK in Iowa City and urge the citizens of this City to support the objectives of this program.
