I worked for roughly three years for a municipal agency in San Francisco, California, where my job responsibilities included serving as the sole staff assistanticoordinator to a municipal commission. I left that job (which I loved) to go to law school; I now work as a lawyer and I'm comfortable reading, interpreting and applying dense code language and explaining it to non - lawyers. Washington Street Iowa City, IA 52240 Re: Boards and Commissions To Whom It May Concern: My wife and I moved to Iowa City last summer. We're settling down here - she's a professor at the University of Iowa College of Law, and I'm working as a lawyer at a small firm downtown - and we're thrilled with how lucky we are to have wound up in such a wonderful hometown. We're relatively new in town, and I would love to get more involved in my community. Please find attached applications to serve on any of five different commissions. (I am aware that no person can serve on more than one commission at once; I'd be very happy to serve on any of the five.) Years ago, before I went to law school, I worked for the San Francisco city government, where one of my job responsibilities was to be the staff liaison to the city's Water and Sewer Rate Fairness Board. My friends made fun of me for having what, they asserted, must be "the single most boring job in all of California'; when I told them that I actually really liked working with the board, they said that if ever there was someone who appeared destined to serve on a municipal subcommittee, it was me. (I'm pretty sure they were making fun of me, but I'll take it.) I suppose it's time to find out! Thank you for your consideration. Warmly, Bram T. Elias 221 E. I9neral Application %ictober 2012 Page 2 of 7 Experience and /or activities which you feel qualify you for this position: As a long time resident of Iowa City I have lived in several diverse neighborhoods, both as a student renter and property owner. The three homes I have owned have been located in mixed rental /owner occupied neighborhoods: I have experienced directly how design and planning have had an impact, both good and bad, on the quality of life of the area residents. My three children have all attended school in the Iowa City District and have experienced the impact city planning and design have on neighborhood schools. As a former adjunct and teaching assistant in Health and Sport Studies, I am aware how the `walkability' and other aspects of the design of an area may have an impact on the health and wellbeing of the residents. My interest and knowledge in the area of conservation and horticulture. Experience working in committees and on numerous boards: What is your present knowledge of this advisory board? Asper the information listed on the City of Iowa City website, I know the board is `charged with making recommendations to the City Council regarding amendments, supplements, changes, and modifications to the Zoning Ordinance'. I would assume a good working knowledge of all aspects related to this process, such as the Comprehensive Plan, zoning ordinances, and plans and requests would be required of board members. What contributions can you make to this advisory board(reason for applying)? Concern for and sensitivity to the diversity of neighborhoods both in balance of green space and buildings and to all the residents served. I have knowledge regarding landscape and the health and wellness of individuals and how one's environment may have a positive or negative impact. I have a passion not only for the community, but also for all present and future residents. I feel strongly we need to look at the how all decisions have an impact, both in the short and long term, on all residents Willingness to thoroughly research and inform myself on aspects needed to make committee recommendations and the time to do so. My friends made fun of me for having what, they asserted, must be "the single most boring job in all of California "; when I told them that I actually really liked working with the board, they said that if ever there was someone who appeared destined to serve on a municipal subcommittee, it was me. (I'm pretty sure they were making fun of me, but I'll take it.) I suppose it's time to find out! Thank you for your consideration. Warmly, r Bram T. Elias 221 E. I worked for roughly three years for a municipal agency in San Francisco, California, where my job responsibilities included serving as the sole staff assistant / coordinator to a municipal commission and helping enforce local codes. Warmly, Bram T. Elias 221 E.
