THE CITY COUNCIL OF IOWA CITY IS CONSIDERING APPOINTMENT TO THE FOLLOWING BOARD:
AIRPORT ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
One vacancy — Five -Year Term
January 1, 2012 - December 31, 2016
The powers and duties of the Airport Zoning Board of Adjustment are:
1. To hear and decide appeals where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement,
decision, or determination made by an administrative official in the enforcement of the Airport
Zoning Chapter.
2. To hear and decide special exceptions to the terms of the Airport Zoning Chapter upon which
such board is required to pass under the Airport Zoning Chapter.
3. To authorize upon appeal in specific cases such variance from the terms of the Airport Zoning
Chapter as will not be contrary to the public interest, where owing to special conditions a literal
enforcement of the provisions of the Airport Zoning Chapter will result in unnecessary hardship,
and so that the spirit of the Airport Zoning Chapter shall be observed and substantial justice done.
Iowa City- appointed members of boards and commissions must be eligible electors of the City of
Iowa City. The Board meets at the call of the Chairperson.
Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2013. The City Iowa City

Duties: To exercise all the powers granted to cities and towns under Chapter 330 of the Code of
Iowa, except the power to sell said airport. To annually certify the amount of taxes within the limitations of
the Statutes of the State of Iowa to be levied for Airport purposes. All funds derived from taxation or
otherwise for airport purposes shall be under the full and absolute control of the Airport Commission,
deposited with the City Treasurer, and disbursed only on the written warrants or order of the Airport
Commission.
Iowa City- appointed members of boards and commissions must be eligible electors of the City of
Iowa City. The Airport Commission meets the second Thursday of each month at 5:45 p.m.

Duties of the Historic Preservation Commission include: conducting studies for the identification and
designation of Historic Districts; reviewing and acting upon all applications for Certificate of
Appropriateness; cooperating with property owners and city agencies regarding remedy of dangerous
conditions; furthering the efforts of historic preservation in the City by making recommendations on
preservation issues, when appropriate, by encouraging the historical, architectural or cultural value, and by

Experience and /or activities which you feel qualify you for this position:
As a long time resident of Iowa City I have lived in several diverse neighborhoods, both
as a student renter and property owner. The three homes I have owned have been located
in mixed rental /owner occupied neighborhoods. I have experienced directly how design
and planning have had an impact, both good and bad, on the quality of life of the area
residents.
My three children have all attended school in the Iowa City District and have
experienced the impact city planning and design have on neighborhood schools.
As a former adjunct and teaching assistant in Health and Sport Studies, I am aware how
the `walkability' and other aspects of the design of an area may have an impact on the
health and wellbeing of the residents.
My interest and knowledge in the area of conservation and horticulture.

What is your present knowledge of this advisory board?
Asper the information listed on the City of Iowa City website, I know the board is
`charged with making recommendations to the City Council regarding amendments,
supplements, changes, and modifications to the Zoning Ordinance'. I would assume a
good working knowledge of all aspects related to this process, such as the
Comprehensive Plan, zoning ordinances, and plans and requests would be required of
board members
What contributions can you make to this advisory board(reason for applying)?
Concern for and sensitivity to the diversity of neighborhoods both in balance of green
space and buildings and to all the residents served.
I have knowledge regarding landscape and the health and wellness of individuals and
how one's environment may have a positive or negative impact.
I have a passion not only for the community, but also for all present and future residents
I feed strongly we need to look at the how all decisions have an impact, both in the short
and long term, on all residents
Willingness to thoroughly research and inform myself on aspects needed to make
committee recommendations and the time to do so.

I have no particular industry experience in land use, building trades etc. but have lived in various communities
throughout the U.S. and have had a deep interest and appreciation of the affect that planning and zoning decisions
have on the quality of life in a community. Iowa City is at a point where significant development is planned and
underway and I would be very interested in becoming involved.
I served on the Iowa City Human Rights Commission for three years with my term ending January 1, 2013.

My knowledge is limited to reading about the activities of the board through the minutes and agendas posted on the

As a newer, returning member of the community ( I was a student at UI during the urban renewal Wries in the '70's),
recognize the significant changes in the city landscape over the years and the challenges that lie ahead in
balancing commercial interests with home -owner and other interests with the goal of a well designed, safe,workable
and aesthetically pleasing community environment.
