PROCLAMATION
Whereas, The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Sho]
Singing in America, Inc. (SPEBSQSA) —known now as The Barbershop Harmony society -
was officially organized April 11, 1938 in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and
Whereas, What began as a small group has steadily blossomed into the world's largest all -
male singing organization, an international organization of men from all stations of life; and
Whereas, The Barbershop Harmony Society is dedicated to the spread of harmony for
enjoyment of all people of the world through organizing and encouraging close - harmony
singing groups; and
Whereas, The Barbershop Harmony Society encourages harmony amongst all people of
the world through the universal language of music; and
Whereas, The Barbershop Harmony Society has actively preserved and presented a distinct
style of vocal music that originated in North America; and
Whereas, The Barbershop Harmony Society is dedicated to sustaining and preserving an
American tradition, the barbershop quartet and harmony choruses; and
Whereas, The Barbershop Harmony Society promotes musical education through music
Scholarships and other means, and supports charitable foundations; and
Whereas, Barbershoppers are engaged in laudable civic service and enrichment of our
cultural life through the fostering of traditional values in entertainment and community
endeavors;
Now, therefore, 1, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby

Whereas, in 1975 a middle -aged man with a disability, Bill Sackter, walked
into the University of Iowa School of Social Work located in North Hall and
changed his life and the lives of every social work student who has graduated
from the University of Iowa and countless people worldwide with a smile, his
harmonica, a caring for others and a strong life - affirming outlook; and
Whereas, as a result of the success of a screenplay written by Barry Morrow, a
movie and TV exposure Bill Sackter was invited to the White House, named
ARC Citizen of the Year, and the coffee shop created for him became a
destination for people traveling across Iowa; and
Whereas, Wild Bill's Coffee Shop was established by Tom Walz and continues
to provide the community an opportunity to interact with persons with
disabilities and serve as an important role in the liberal arts education of
University students; and
Whereas, we wish mark the 100th birthday of Bill Sackter on April 13th with a
community celebration to commemorate the important place in history Bill's life
story represents.
Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City,
Iowa do hereby proclaim April 13, 2013, as,

remarkable team of people who have worked for decades to keep the

WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state - sponsored, systematic persecution and
annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933
and 1945 during which time six million were murdered; Roma (Gypsies), people with
disabilities, and Poles were also targeted for destruction or decimation for racial,
ethnic, or national reasons; and millions more, including homosexuals, Jehovah's
Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war, and political dissidents, suffered oppression and
death under Nazi tyranny; and
WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the
moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments and remain vigilant
against hatred, persecution, and tyranny; and
WHEREAS, we should actively rededicate ourselves to the principles of individual
freedom in a just society; and
WHEREAS, the Days of Remembrance were set aside to remember the victims of
the Holocaust and reflect on the need for respect for all peoples; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to an Act of Congress the United States Holocaust Memorial
Council designates the Days of Remembrance, which includes the Day of
Remembrance known as Yom Hashoah, April 8, 2013.
Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the
week of Sunday, April 7, through Sunday, April 14, 2013, as
DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE
in memory of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust; and further affirm that as
citizens of Iowa City we should work to promote human dignity and confront hate
whenever and wherever it occurs.

century and supporting veterans and military families to preserving the
environment and helping communities recover from natural disasters; and
WHEREAS, national service expands economic opportunity by creating more
sustainable, resilient communities and providing education, career skills, and
leadership abilities for those who serve; and
WHEREAS, national service participants serve in more than 70,000 locations
across the country, bolstering the civic, neighborhood, and faith -based
organizations that are so vital to our economic and social well- being; and
WHEREAS, national service represents a unique public - private partnership that
invests in community solutions and leverages non - federal resources to strengthen
community impact and increase the return on taxpayer dollars; and,

their full potential by providing specialized academic tutoring and other services
that enrich the student, family, and community; and

Whereas, The not for profit organization is designed and dedicated to helping at-
risk youth in grades 3`d- 8th in Iowa City and surrounding communities succeed in
school, life and society; and
Whereas, The objectives of the program are to promote academic achievement,
participate in service learning projects, enhance career development, increase self -
awareness, focus on college or vocational preparation, and strengthen the family
unit; and
Whereas, Academic tutoring is the foundation of SFS, and is provided by well
trained, licensed teachers, staff and volunteers and helps students who are behind
in their reading and math skills achieve grade level proficiency; and
Whereas, The program fosters community involvement through service learning
projects and volunteer opportunities; and increases parent- to- child academic
awareness by helping parents attend school conferences and promoting
parent /child learning to increase organizational and time management skills.
