1 have considerable experience in drafting and litigation contracts, some were related to real estate, most were not.
I was occasionally involved in litigating construction issues, but that is not a specialty area.
I was sometimes involved in contract negotiations and litigations concerning finance. Most of these cases involved
corporate finance (venture capital) or cleaning up after failed or disputed transactions.
I was fairly frequently involved in litigation that involved the determination of damages in commercial cases (such as
distributor /franchise termination damages, patent or copyright infringement damages). This required some skill in dealing
with both accounting data and the various tools for analysis and projection employed by experts.

EXPERIENCE AND /OR ACTIVITIES WHICH YOU FEEL QUALIFY YOU FOR THIS POSITION:
I am a devoted Iowa City resident who would bring a love of community, procedural familiarity, and substantive
knowledge to the Housing and Community Development Commission. I served as Vice -Chair of the Generation Iowa
Commission (appointed by Gov. Culver), which gave me experience working as part of a public commission. Trained
as a lawyer and urban planner, I am well- versed in both the public policy and technical affordable housing issues this
board addresses. My graduate education in urban planning focused on housing, and I have completed coursework in
housing policy. During graduate school, I interned for the then - Executive Director of the Iowa Finance Authority and
worked on a year -long housing and community development project with the Oakdale- Jackson neighborhood in the
City of Cedar Rapids. After grad school, I did state -level public policy research. Perhaps most importantly, I love this
pity, and believe members of this board play an integral role in making it a truly great place.
WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD?
I am aware of the board's scope and have a general sense of its place within the overall structure of Iowa City's
government.
WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS CAN YOU MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD (REASON FORAPPLYING)?
My education and work experience -- combined with my belief that affordable housing is a right to be enjoyed by
everyone - -will allow me to make thoughtful, well - considered contributions to the board's deliberations. A former
mediator and current adjunct faculty member at the University teaching conflict resolution in the urban planning
context, I believe my experience with mediating conflict will make me an asset to the board.

Experience and /or activities which you feel qualify you for this position:
As a long time resident of Iowa City I have lived in several diverse neighborhoods, both
as a student renter and property owner. The three homes I have owned have been located
in mixed rental /owner occupied neighborhoods I have experienced directly how design
and planning have had an impact, both good and bad, on the quality of life of the area
residents.
My three children have all attended school in the Iowa City District and have
experienced the impact city planning and design have on neighborhood schools.
As a former adjunct and teaching assistant in Health and Sport Studies, I am aware how
the 'walkability' and other aspects of the design of an area may have an impact on the
health and wellbeing of the residents.
My interest and knowledge in the area of conservation and horticulture.
Experience working in committees and on numerous boards.
What is your present knowledge of this advisory board?
As per the information listed on the City of Iowa City website, I know the board is
`charged with making recommendations to the City Council regarding amendments,
supplements, changes, and modifications to the Zoning Ordinance'. I would assume a
good working knowledge of all aspects related to this process, such as the
Comprehensive Plan, zoning ordinances, and plans and requests would be required of
board members.
What contributions can you make to this advisory board(reason for applying)?
Concern for and sensitivity to the diversity of neighborhoods both in balance of green
space and buildings and to all the residents served.
I have knowledge regarding landscape and the health and wellness of individuals and
how one's environment may have a positive or negative impact.
I have a passion not only for the community, but also for all present and future residents
I feel strongly we need to look at the how all decisions have an impact, both in the short
and long term, on all residents.
Willingness to thoroughly research and inform myself on aspects needed to make
committee recommendations and the time to do so.

As much as I hate to do this, I feel I need to resign from the Public Arts committee. The
business has really taken off, and currently takes every minute of my time - it's a good problem,
but a tad overwhelming. I absolutely have loved being on the committee, and will definitely
miss it.
Thank you so much for letting me be part of things - I greatly appreciate the experience! At
some point I'd love to get back to it.
Best,
Jan
