Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2013 to be IOWA CITY GIRLS SOFTBALL MONTH and call upon the community to acknowledge the success of the program and benefit to our community. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the bicycle is an economical, environmentally sound, effective means of transportation, recreation, and fitness; and Whereas, the bicycle is considered a legitimate vehicle in all 50 states and is entitled to legal and responsible use of all public roads in Iowa, except interstate highways; and Whereas, increased use of the bicycle will benefit all citizens by improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing use of and dependence upon finite energy resources and will foster healthy lifestyles; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City has an ongoing commitment to encourage bicycling as a viable mode of transportation and recreation; and Whereas, May 13 -17 has been declared National Bike to Work Week, and the City of Iowa City supports bicycling to work; and Whereas, the League of American Bicyclists has established the month of May as National Bicycle Month. Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, This 14th day of May, 2013 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, a scald injury occurs when contact with hot liquid or ste damages layers of the skin, and Whereas, nearly half of all burn injuries treated in hospital emergency departments, and a third of admissions to burn centers are scald injuries, and Whereas, the most frequent scald injury victims are young children, older adults and persons with disabilities, and Whereas, common sources of scald burns involve everyday occurrences, such as spilled hot beverages, cooking spills, and hot tap water, and Whereas, scalding injuries can be prevented by increasing public awareness of the need to create safety zones and provide appropriate supervision to household members who are at greatest risk of scald injuries, and Whereas, public awareness can also reduce the impact of scald injuries by communicating the need to call 911 and seek medical treatment immediately after an injury, and Whereas, emergency responders in Iowa City encourage greater public awareness of scald injury causes, and support injury prevention efforts, Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa do hereby proclaim the month May 2013 to be Scald Injury Awareness Month throughout the city, and I urge all the residents of Iowa City to safeguard themselves and their families from scald injuries year- round.
