General Application October 2012 Page 2 of 7 Addendum to page 2 of the City of Iowa City Advisory Board f Comimssion /Committee Application Form . William Nusser, applicant EXPERIENCE AND /OR ACTIVITIES WHICH YOU FEEL QUALIFY YOU FOR THIS POSITION: I have worked in Iowa City for nearly 44 years and work in an industry (jewelry) that requires a refined aesthetic sense and appreciation. I served on the Friends Development Council of the University of Iowa Museum of Art for three terms and was board chair twice. I was on the Arts Fest board of directors for four years (before it became SOTA). I have paid for the commision of an award - winning work of public art (BookMarks public art project of the Iowa City Public Library: "Treasure Island" by Tam Bodkin Bryk); consulted with the artist on the design concept; then I purchased this same artwork and donated it to the City of Iowa City. I have been a volunteer as well as a significant donor to the UI Museum of Art, have chaired fundraising events for the UIMA, and enjoyed memberships in the Czech and Slovak Museum and the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art "just up the road ". I have hired artists to create public art through the two small and one large display windows of Hands jewelers for four decades, and thus have private experience in how the public can and does respond to public art. I have always considered it a great obligation to the public to exhibit quality and originality in our display windows by employing and collaborating with artists to present our merchandise within the context of public art. I am also the incoming president of the Iowa City Downtown District so I have had indirect but insider experience with the downtown's BenchMarks program from its inception to its currently emerging "second phase ". Finally, I am the ICDD board representative as a stakeholder in the City of Iowa City's downtown streetscape improvement project, which will necessarily involve public art in many roles. WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD? I am personally acquainted with several committee members. I have worked with Marcia HIingaman Bollinger in donating Tam Bryk`s BookMark sculpture to the city and its current placement on the pedestrian plaza.. I continue to work with Rick Fosse and Mike Moran in my role as a representative of the ICDD in the downtown streetscape project (Addendum to page 2, continued) I have passively paid attention to the work of this committee since its inception, mostly through casual conversations with past and present committee members and through local news reporting of the committee's activities. WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS CAN YOU MAKE TO THISADVISORYBOARD (REASON FOR APPLYING)? I am applying to fill the remaining term of a departing member, so I think this is helpful to the committee. I am acquainted well enough with most of the committee members and the city staff so I would not experience the same learning curve as others with less experience working together with this group. Through my business, I have had experience in presenting public art, experiencing public art, selecting public art and donating public art. As a board member of the Iowa City Downtown District, I think there might be the potential benefit of my awareness of opportunities for collaboration or avoiding overlap between this committee and the ICDD. As a lifelong resident of Iowa City, as a local business owner, and as a parent who has brought up my children in this great city, I feel obligated to return my gratitude and good fortune in having had the benefit of all of the amenities this city offers, including public art, by "paying it forward" through public service. I tend not to be very political, which could also be a plus, so service on this committee would seem a good fit for my abilities and desires. _1 I 1 BOARD COMMISSION AND COMMITTEES BUSINESS LISTING .., CITY OF IOWA CITY Name of City Board /Commission /Committee Public Art Advisory Committee Date May 6, 2013 Name William G. General Application October 2012 Page 3 of 7 From: Taylor, Alexander <alexander - taylor -1 @uiowa.edu> Sent: Wednesday, May 29, 2013 2:52 PM To: Marian Karr Cc: Mike Moran Subject: Resignation from Parks and Rec. Marian, Due to a series of unforeseen (but not unfortunate) events, we sold our house (not even listed) but quickly found a new place to live. Regretfully, this "new place" is in Coralville. As an unintended consequence of this pending move, I understand I no longer qualify to be on the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Commission. Therefore, I must sadly resign from this commission effective June 28, 2013. I've already notified Mike, and he's cc'd on this note as verification. I enjoyed my brief stint on this commission, and truly wish there was a loop -hole for me to continue. Absent that, I suppose you'll have to post the opening. Thank you very much for your work with the City, and thank you and the council for the opportunity to participate /serve on this terrific commission. Kind regards, -a.t.
