HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-06-18 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Independence from the colonial rule of Great Britain came in the year 1776, following a Revolutionary War; and WHEREAS, Even after independence was won, the people brought from Africa to this country were still forced to remain in legalized human slavery; and WHEREAS, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, but it had little effect until after the Civil War; and WHEREAS, on June 18, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its slaves. " Juneteenth" celebrations began in Texas the following year and have been celebrated ever since to commemorate the national freeing of enslaved people; and WHEREAS, "Celebrating Juneteenth: Commemorating the End of Slavery ", a community celebration with games, activities, food, and prizes as well as a health and financial wellness fair, will be held at Mercer Park 2701 Bradford Drive, June 29, 2013, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Matthew J. Hayek do join other Mayors' across the country to proclaim June 19, 2013 as Juneteenth National Freedom Day Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 18th day of June, 2013.
