HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-09-17 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, our founding fathers, in order to secure the blessings of liberty for themselves and their posterity, did ordain and establish a Constitution for the United States of America, and Whereas, it is of the greatest importance that all citizens fully understand the provisions and principles contained in the Constitution in order to effectively support, preserve and defend it against all enemies; and Whereas, the two hundred twenty second anniversary of the signing of the Constitution provides an historic opportunity for all Americans to remember the achievements of the Framers of the Constitution, and the rights, privileges, and responsibilities afforded to us in this unique document; and Whereas, the independence guaranteed to American citizens, whether by birth or naturalization, should be remembered, Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa do hereby proclaim the week of September 17 -23, 2013, to be Constitution Week in Iowa City and urge all citizens to reflect during that week on the many benefits of our Federal Constitution and the privileges and responsibilities of American citizenship. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the national observation of Hispanic Heritage Month was initiated in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week, and begins on September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin America countries —Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition Mexico declared its independence on September 16 and Chile on September 18; Whereas, the celebration expanded to 30 days in 1988 ending on October 15; and Whereas, by increasing awareness, highlighting commonalities, and promoting understanding we can further appreciate the contributions that Latinos make within our society. Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa do hereby proclaim September 16 - October 15, 2013 to be National Hispanic Heritage Month and encourage citizens to share, explore and learn more about the rich cultural, political and historical perspectives and the social and economic impact of Latinos in this community. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Iowa City holds the health and safety of its young adults as a chief concern; and text messaging is the main mode of communication for most American teenagers with half of all teens sending between 21 and 70 texts a day; and Whereas, 90% of American teenagers expect a reply to a text message within five minutes; and texting takes one's eyes off the road for an average of five seconds; and Whereas, in an AT &T survey, 43% of American teenage drivers admitted to texting while driving even though 97% know it is dangerous; and Whereas, a Virginia Tech study showed those who send text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to crash; and a driver that sends a text message while driving not only jeopardizes his or her safety, but also the safety of the passengers, pedestrians and other drivers; and Whereas, the " Texting & Driving -It Can Wait" program can literally save lives throughout our City, State and Country. Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa do hereby proclaim September 19, 2013 to be No Text On Board — Pledge Day in Iowa City and urges all citizens to join in on this day to stop texting and driving. Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa this 17th day of September, 2013 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION nerica's system of public lands includes parks, unique lands IUIUb�b, W11Ullle refuges, historic trails, natural streams and wetlands, nature centers, community gardens and other landmarks throughout the nation that individually and collectively represent our shared irreplaceable national resources; and Whereas, public lands promote civic ideals that include shared stewardship recognition of public ownership; and Whereas, recreation opportunities offered by public lands help families and individuals lead an active lifestyle and reduce the incidence of childhood obesity; and Whereas, land conservation efforts improve access to public lands for urban residents and work to break down the barriers that prevents Americans from actively utilizing their public lands; and Whereas, a collaboration among residents and community leaders improves the condition of publicly held lands for the greater enjoyment of all; and Whereas, this is the nation's largest, single -day volunteer effort for public lands and has become an annual celebration for local participation on publicly held lands. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matt Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, does hereby proclaim September 28, 2013 as the 201h Anniversary of National Public Lands Day and call upon the people of Iowa City to recognize and participate in the special observance.
