HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-12-17 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Connie Champion was elected to the School Board in 1987 and served election to the City Council in 1997; and Whereas, over the last 16 years Connie Champion attended more than 400 City uouncu meetings, voting on an estimated 800 ordinances and 7,000 resolutions, and attended countless committee and intergovernmental meetings, and Whereas, during her tenure Connie Champion served with eight different City Councils and was the Council representative to the Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Rules Committee, the Student Senate Subcommittee, the SEATS Paratransit board, the Johnson County Justice Coordinating Committee, and the Johnson County Council of Governments (JCCOG) (now known as Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPOJC)); and Whereas, even while serving on the Council, Connie Champion always made time to run a downtown business, raise money for Shelter House and other causes, and preside over large family gatherings (including 20 grandchildren by latest count); and Whereas, no force of nature — not even the combined effect of one tornado, two floods, three major winter storms, and one landfill fire — can match Connie Champion's larger -than-life personality; and Whereas, former Council Members sent in their favorite memories of working with Connie but they were not appropriate for young audiences and therefore will not be included in this proclamation; and Whereas, 16 years represent the longest period of Council service known to present day City staff, the media, or anyone still alive with knowledge of City matters, making Connie Champion a true matriarch of the City Council. Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, and with full knowledge that she will likely protest, do hereby proclaim Wednesday, December 18, 2013, as CONNIE CHAMPION DAY and encourage Iowa Citians to thank Connie for her service and recognize that the community owes her an immense debt of gratitude.
