HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-02-18 Proclamation4a City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Sertoma International, a civic organization, whose motto is "Service to Mankind," has adopted a Freedom Week Program dedicated to the emphasis of values and responsibilities of people in a democracy; and Whereas, Sertoma International has promoted the distribution of copies of the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence throughout its Clubs; and Whereas, the Old Capitol Sertoma Club of Iowa City and Coralville supports Freedom Week through its National Heritage Essay Contest, for Eighth Grade students in Johnson County designed to emphasize and educate on responsibilities of citizens in a democracy; and Whereas, it seems fitting to accord official recognition to Sertoma's Freedom Week. Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim and designate the week of February 17 -21, 2014 to be: SERTOMA'S FREEDOM WEEK in Iowa City and urge the citizens of this City to support the objectives of this program. 4. 6k-�-C� Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 18th day of February, 2014 City of Iowa City Proclamation WHEREAS, the Barbershop Harmony Society, was officially organized April 11, 1938; and WHEREAS, the Society has actively preserved and presented a distinct style of vocal music originated in North America; and WHEREAS, the Society is dedicated to the growth of harmony singing for the enjoyment of all, through organizing, educating and encouraging harmony singing throughout the community; and WHEREAS, Iowa City's Old Capitol Chorus was officially chartered December 26, 1963, show casing approximately 450 men from this community over the years; and NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the week of March 1 -March 7, 2014 to be Old Capitol Chorus Week and encourage everyone join in celebrating SO Years of Harmony.
