PROCLAMATION
Whereas, Special Olympians have a strong desire to compete and
win; and
Whereas, Special Olympians know that bravery is measured in
setting goals and attempting to reach them; and
Whereas, Special Olympians recognize the joy, pride and self -
worth, humility and disappointment, inherent in organized
competition; and
Whereas, Special Olympians appreciate the benefits that healthy
competition and physical activity can bring; and
Whereas, Special Olympians give the entire community a chance
to gather and share in their spirit of accomplishment;
Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa
City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2014 to be
Special Olympics Month
in the City of Iowa City and urge all citizens to commend and
support the activities of the Special Olympics.

Sarge and Eunice Shriver founded Special Olympics in 1968 with less than 100
participants in the first competition. SOI has served Iowans with intellectual for 46
years and in 2013 Iowa provided training and competition in 22 sports to over 13,000
athletes from across Iowa's 99 counties.
Mid - Winter Tournament March 14 (Banquet) & 15 (Competition)
U of I Fleldhouse The Mid - Winter Tournament will bring over 1200 Special Olympic Athletes & their
coach's to the IC area to compete in: Basketball, Basketball Skills, Cheerleading, Gymnastics
and Power Lifting.
Once the athletes arrive in Iowa City all their expenses are covered
through the proceeds of our fundraising events, All fund raised in this area are
used to offset expenses for the Mid - Winter Tournament. Ours is the only event fully
funded, second largest event in Iowa, Summer Games in Ames has over 2,000 athletes
competing. Dubuque Winter games held in January —450 athletes.
1. Sponsor an Athlete Campaign is going now. The area businesses
are so important with their donations to the campaign, without them we
could not enjoy the success we have had and hope to continue.
2. Polar Plunge March 29 Coralville Reservoir -Law Enforcement
Torch Run, area Law Enforcement, U of I Sororities and Fraternities,
area Companies, Businesses, High Schools and many groups from the
General Public.
3. Swing with the Celebrities Golf Tournament University of Iowa
Athletes & Coach's @ Brown Deer Golf Course, Friday June 27
Iowa City Council gives our Special Olympics Athletes the recognition
they so deserve, by making March "Special Olympics Month. "
