HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-04-01 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, service to others is a hallmark of the American character, central to how we meet our challenges; and WHEREAS, the nation's mayors are increasingly turning to national service and volunteerism as a cost - effective strategy to meet city needs; and WHEREAS, millions of volunteers working in their communities make a real difference in the lives of children, adults and the elderly; and WHEREAS, national service expands economic opportunity by creating more sustainable, resilient communities and providing education, career skills and leadership abilities for those who serve; and WHEREAS, giving oneself in service to another empowers the giver and the recipient. Experience teaches us that government by itself cannot solve all of our nation's social problems. Volunteers are vital to our future as a caring and productive nation; and WHEREAS, the Corporation for National and Community Service shares a priority with mayors nationwide to engage citizens, improve lives, and strengthen communities; and is joining with the National League of Cities, City of Service, and mayors across the country to recognize the impact of service on the Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service on April 1, 2014. NOW THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim April 1, 2014, as National Service Recognition Day and encourage residents to recognize the positive impact of national service in our city; to thank those who serve; and to find ways to give back to their communities. Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 1 st day of April, 2014 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the goal of this week is to increase public awareness of the need to improve the personal financial literacy of Iowans; and WHEREAS, personal financial education is essential for ensuring that Iowans are prepared to manage money investments, and credit wisely and responsibly; and WHEREAS, the Federal Reserve bank of Chicago joins with more than 200 partnering organizations in Iowa, to comprise a coalition of concerned professionals who volunteer their time and energy to promote financial education for Iowa's consumers to meet these literacy goals; and WHEREAS, acquisition of financial literacy skills by Iowans will improve the quality of their lives, will provide them with skills for success, will contribute to positive changes for the communities in which they live and work, and will benefit the economy of this state; and WHEREAS, this endeavor is worthy of support and cooperation for the benefit of the citizens and consumers of the state to protect their financial future.
