HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-05-06 Proclamationa City of Iowa City PROCLAMATI ®N Whereas, the bicycle is an economical, environmentally sound, and effective means of transportation, recreation, and fitness; and Whereas, the bicycle is considered a legitimate vehicle in all 50 states and is entitled to legal and responsible use of all public roads in Iowa, except interstate highways; and Whereas, increased use of the bicycle will benefit all citizens by improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing use of and dependence upon finite energy resources and will foster healthy lifestyles; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City has an ongoing commitment to encourage bicycling as a viable mode of transportation and recreation; and Whereas, May 12 -16 has been declared National Bike to Work Week, and the City of Iowa City supports bicycling to work; and Whereas, the League of American Bicyclists has established the month of May as National Bicycle Month. Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2014 to be Bicycle Month in Iowa City, and encourage all citizens to ride their bicycles to work, to the store, to the park, and with friends and family to promote the benefits achieved from bicycling. Now, Therefore, 1, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim Saturday, May 10, 2014 to be PROJECT GREEN DAY in the City of Iowa City and encourage all residents to support the Project GREEN Plant Sale and enjoy the many beautiful areas in the community that Project GREEN has made possible. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Dottie Ray was hired by KXIC Radio station owner Gene Clausen in 1960; and Whereas, for more than 54 years, Dottie Ray has served our community as hostess of the radio show "The Dottie Ray Show," greeting guests with a warm welcome, a fresh cup of coffee, and a genuine interest in what they had to say; and Whereas, during her career with KXIC, Dottie Ray has interviewed some 32,000 guests and welcomed community leaders, directors of non - profit organizations, and news makers of all kinds into her cozy home; and Whereas, there is little doubt that Dottie Ray has endeared herself to countless Iowa Citians who will miss her voice on the radio. Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, declare May 13th, 2014 as Dottie Ray Day in Iowa City to recognize and celebrate Dottie's dedication, service, and commitment to our community for over half a century.
