PROCLAMATION
Whereas, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people
across the nation celebrate their pride in their culture and
community in the month of June; and
Whereas, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people
in the Iowa City community will celebrate Pride Day in June;
and
Whereas, the Iowa City community is strengthened and
enhanced through the contributions of all its diverse citizens;
Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the
City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim June 2014 to be

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Independence from the colonial rule of Great Britain came in the year
1776, following a Revolutionary War; and
WHEREAS, Even after independence was won, the people brought from Africa to
this country were still forced to remain in legalized human slavery; and
WHEREAS, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on
September 22, 1862, but it had little effect until after the Civil War; and
WHEREAS, On June 18, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take
possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its slaves; and
WHEREAS, "Juneteenth" celebrations began in Texas the following year and have
been celebrated ever since to commemorate the national freeing of enslaved people; and
WHEREAS, "Celebrating Juneteenth: Commemorating the End of Slavery ", a
community celebration with games, activities, food, and prizes as well as a health and
financial wellness fair, will be held at Mercer Park 2701 Bradford Drive, June 14, 2014,
from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa,
do proclaim June 14, 2014 to be

in Iowa City.
