PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, in the state of Iowa, suicide is the 12th leading cause of all deaths and
the 2nd leading cause of death among people from the ages of 15 to 44; and
WHEREAS, in the United States, one person dies by suicide every 13.3 minutes,
with 39,518 deaths by suicide in our country during 2011; and
WHEREAS, the Johnson County Suicide Prevention Coalition, dedicated to reducing
the frequency of suicide attempts and deaths by:
1. Recognizing suicide as a national, state and local public health problem
and declare suicide prevention to be a priority;
2. Acknowledging that no single suicide prevention program or effort will
be appropriate for all populations or communities;
3. Encouraging initiatives based on the National Strategy for Suicide
Prevention:
a. Supporting community -based suicide prevention programs and
suicide bereavement support services.
b. Promoting efforts to reduce access to lethal means for people
considering suicide.
c. Implementing training for the recognition of at -risk behavior and for
the delivery of effective treatment.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby
proclaim September 7 -13, 2014, to be
"Suicide Prevention Week"
in Iowa City and encourage residents to learn how they can help.
