PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the United Nations General Assembly has reaffirmed that since wars
begin in the minds of men and women, it is in the minds of men and women that the
defenses of peace must be constructed; and
WHEREAS, the General Assembly declared that September 21, 2014, the opening
day of the regular sessions of the General Assembly of the United Nations, shall be
officially proclaimed and observed as an International Day of Peace and shall be devoted
to commemorating and strengthening the ideas of peace; and
WHEREAS, the General Assembly recalled that the promotion of peace is among the
main purposes of the United Nations, and reaffirmed that a peace based exclusively upon
political and economic arrangements of governments would not be a peace that would
secure the unanimous, and that the peace must therefore be founded upon the intellectual
and moral solidarity of humankind; and
WHEREAS, the General Assembly invited all member states, organizations, non-
governmental organizations, and people to commemorate in an appropriate manner
through education, and to cooperate with the United Nations in the observance of that
day.
Now, Therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do
hereby proclaim Sunday, September 21, 2014 as:
Peace Day
in Iowa City and encourage citizens to promote the ideas of peace and to give positive
evidence of the commitment to peace in all viable ways.

WHEREAS, America's system of public lands includes parks, unique landscapes,
forests,_ wildlife refuges, historic trails, natural streams and wetlands, nature centers,
community gardens and other landmarks throughout the nation that individually and
collectively represent our shared irreplaceable national resources; and
WHEREAS, public lands promote civic ideals that include shared stewardship
recognition of public ownership; and
-WHEREAS, recreation opportunities offered by public lands help families and
individuals lead an active lifestyle and reduce the incidence of childhood obesity; and
WHEREAS, land conservation efforts improve access to p4bla9 1 .4 4 urban
residents and work to break down the barriers that prevents AriZ�ca -Q.
utilizing their public lands; and
WHEREAS, a collaboration among residents and community Ie�tt !�
