PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and
homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and
WHEREAS, three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without
working smoke alarms so working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home
fires in half; and
WHEREAS, Iowa City's residents should install smoke alanns in every sleeping
room, outside each separate sleeping area, on every level of the home and should meet the
needs of people who are deaf or hard of hearing; and
WHEREAS, Iowa City's residents who have planned and practiced a home fire
escape plan are more prepared and will therefore be more likely to survive a fire; and
WHEREAS, Iowa City's first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of
home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and
WHEREAS, Iowa City's residents are responsive to public education measures and
are able to take steps to increase their safety from fire, especially in their homes.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby
proclaim October 5 -11, 2014, as:
Fire Prevention Week
throughout the city, and I urge all the residents to test their smoke alarms at least every
month and to practice their home fire escape plan during Fire Prevention Week 2014 and
year- round.

Whereas, the national observation of Hispanic Heritage Month was initiated in
1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week, and begins on September 15, the
anniversary of independence for five Latin America countries —Costa Rica, El
Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition Mexico declared its
independence on September 16 and Chile on September 18; and
Whereas, the celebration expanded to 30 days in 1988 ending on October 15; and
Whereas, by increasing awareness, highlighting commonalities, and promoting
understanding we can further appreciate the contributions that Latinos make within
our society.
Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa do
hereby proclaim September 16 - October 15, 2014 to be
National Hispanic Heritage Month
and encourage citizens to share, explore and learn more about the rich cultural,
political and historical perspectives and the social and economic impact of Latinos in
this community.
