C/1 CD r-f CD vn O CD CD CD �-t �n CD vn o ►-h �: CD �D r • • City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the United Nations was founded in 1945 to "save succeeding generations from the scourge of war "; and Whereas, the anniversary of the day on which the UN Charter came into force is observed each year on October 24; and Whereas, the United Nations has a commendable record of achievement in negotiating and resolving conflict, framing international standards for protection of human rights, improving standards of living, and providing a global context for development and economic progress; and Whereas, the United Nations has a direct impact on Iowans by providing international stability for trade, protection from infectious diseases, global weather forecasting, and international travel regulations; and Whereas, the United Nations is the focal point for international efforts to address global climate disruption and is vital now more than ever; and Whereas, the United Nations have declared 2014 the "International Year of Family Farming, feeding the world, caring for the earth. " NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, officially proclaim October 24, 2014 to be UNITED NATIONS DAY in Iowa City, and herby urge all citizens to participate in UN- related service projects. Mayor Signed in I6wa City, Iowa, this 2 1St day 6f October, 2014 City of Iowa City Proclamation WHEREAS, the City of Iowa City is committed to ensuring the u�Lu security of all those living in and visiting our city; and WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and WHEREAS, between the hours of 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM are the peak alarm times for fire deaths —when people tend to be asleep; and WHEREAS, almost two - thirds of home fire deaths in the United States resulted from fires in homes with inoperable smoke alarms or no smoke alarms; and WHEREAS, the designation of a special day to remind residents of Iowa City to change the batteries in their smoke alarms, timed to coincide with the fall ritual of changing clocks, would greatly diminish the chance of this tragedy occurring in Iowa City; and WHEREAS, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years; and WHEREAS, November 2" d, 2014 is the day the citizens of Iowa City change their clocks from daylight savings time to standard time. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim November 2"d, 2014 to be Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery Day in Iowa City and urge all residents to change their smoke alarm batteries and install new smoke alarms to replace smoke alarms if they are ten years old or older. Mayor Signed in Iowa Ci X, Iowa this 21St day of 96tober, 2014 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Herbert Hoover was born the son of a blacksmith in west tsrancn, Iowa on August 10, 1874, and grew up fishing in a local creek and working in his father's shop; and Whereas, Herbert Hoover became a mining engineer, a humanitarian, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, and the 31St President of the United States; and Whereas, Hoover Elementary School was dedicated by former President Herbert Hoover in August 1954 with a mission to provide a caring environment that helps maximize every student's knowledge, skills, and attitude; to enable each student to be a positive influence in an ever - changing democratic society; and to utilize the resources of a challenging curriculum through diverse and dedicated staff, families, and community; and Whereas, Fifty years after the death of President Hoover, his legacy will be marked with ceremony and volunteerism with his hometown of West Branch and members of the Hoover family joining local volunteers to pack meals to be distributed to low- income families on October 25th ; and Whereas, Herbert Hoover's grandson, Andrew, great granddaughter, Margaret, and great grandson, Alexander, will be visiting Hoover Elementary School in Iowa City on October 24th, and various school appreciation and educational activities are planned.
