PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, American Indians and Alaska Natives have profoundly shaped our
country's character and our cultural heritage, today Native Americans are still leaders in
every aspect of our society and have faced moments of profound triumph and tragedy
alike; and
WHEREAS, our debt to the first Americans is immense, as is our responsibility to
ensure their fair, equal treatment and to honor the commitments we made to their
forebears; and
WHEREAS, we celebrate and honor the many ways they have enriched our Nation,
and we renew our commitment to respecting each tribe's identity while ensuring equal
opportunity to pursue the American dream.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby
proclaim November 2014 to be
National Native American Heritage Month
and so I call upon all to commemorate this month with appropriate programs and
activities celebrating Native American ancestry and their time honored traditions.
