The Food Bank program serves a diverse population, and in my six years as the program's Director I have come to a deeper realization of the many ways that different groups are oppressed, ostracized, and otherwise excluded from the opportunities afforded to privileged groups. I am also part of the Local Homeless Coordinating ,loard and serving on the Advocacy Committee, which is tasked with understanding how the community views persons experiencing homelessness and developing an advocacy campaign to help our efforts to improve the lives of persons experiencing homelessness. It is clear to me that the people I serve in these roles are often in vulnerable and impoverished situations because of the disadvantages they face as a result of oppression. WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD? She hzs perforriedzi ev admirably in her teaching at MIT and is much .admired by hex students and faulty - Dr. Snodgrass is a prize-winning poet with numerous awards and residencies. She,is also cn an accomplished translator and critic of twentieth century American and BritishLiterature. -. She has a healthy list of publications to her name, including three volumes of -essays, original poetry, and translation that appeared in the Last three years. It is clear her pen - will not rite dry. At NT =,•she has been very successful in the competition for support from the Dean'.s Fund, which I oversee. I know Dr. Snodb ass to be active and a leader in the professional and learned societies to . which: she belongs. She was a major player, for instance, in the 2003 North East Modern Languages Association annual meeting in Boston, for which she served as local host and chair. I know the time and labor that goes into making such events a success, and I also know that Dr. Snodgrass deserves enounous credit for,her contributions to making the 2003 meeting shine. NET was proud to be associated with that meeting. To sum up: Dr. Ann Snodgrass is an accomplished teacher, poet and critic and leader in the literary guild. We have been most fortunate to have -her as a colleagiie:at MIT these past six years. I can recommend her with genuine enthusiasm for teaching positions in Writing programs and English departments at research universities and liberal arts colleges. Thank you.. I am writing to recommend Ann Snodgrass for a teaching position in Modem Literature, Creative Writing (Poetry), and Translatibn: Ms. Snodgrass has a wonderfully rich background. With her translations of the poetry of Luciano Erba and Amelia Rosselli she.is establishing herself as a sig cant translator of Italian poetry, and her work has been recognized by a Fulbright grant, the PEN American Center's Renato Poggioli Award, support from the Academy of American Poets, and numerous publications in literary journals as well as the publication as a book of Erba's The Hippopotamus. Shes making a name for herself in criticism as well, with her book on the -poetic bilingualism"= of Rosselli; Knowing Noise.. The English Poems of Amelia Rosselli is a subtle, -7; theoretically sophisticated, and learned book about this major experimental 20":ceIItur Italian poet. And Snodgrass is herself a poet of tact, grace, and intelligence, virtt=s-she brings of cot?rse to her translation of poetry. As a teacher/ scholar, Snodgrass has by'now ammsecf im ssivebreadtl3'of i J _ ecpeiaence. From her c.v. you will see that she has taught courses in a wide rant -of F - 'subjects (Memoir,. the Fantastic, World Liteiature; Internedonal•Literature,. Wo en's - Studies, Holocaust Iltdrature ... ),I have seen her in action and she is "a class act," to use-_-, the vernacular. The context in which I observed her was the Translation Seminar at Boston University, where I invited her to give a two-hour guest lecture last year. The students ---mostly graduate students—said it was one of their favorite presentations df. -616 seminar. Snodgrass was informative, clear, well organized, funny, energetic, precise... and very responsive to student questions. She ran the lecture/ seminar with a kind of - iwing grace, establishing an atmosphere of total intellectual seriousness that shaped i ie.twc hours memorably for all of us who -witnessed it. With such stimulation, the students participated'witli gusto. On -the basis bf this expeiience, as mll'as her published work, I have no hesitation in recommending Ann Snodgrass for a teaching position in English, Comparative Literature, or Creative Writing. Hi There, Elizabeth Pusack here. I just received an email from Stefanie Bowers at the Human Rights Commission, and she suggested I follow up with you guys about my application to the board. I'm happy to answer any questions about me you might have! I am an Iowa City native. I'm finishing my MFA at the Writers' Workshop right now, and working at Shelter House. I work directly with clients experiencing various obstacles as they seek housing, employment, education, health care, and access to other resources. I've been serving on the Public Arts Board for the past year, but my term just expired. I've loved being able to contribute to the decision making and development of programming in Iowa City. I am very excited about the possibility of continuing to help keep Iowa City a wonderful place to live for all its citizens.
