HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-03-23 ProclamationCity of Iowa City Rocklamation WHEREAS, The Englert Theatre, Iowa City Public Library, Hills Bank and Trust Company, and the University of Iowa Office of Outreach and Engagement have partnered to create a free kid's music album named "For Kids and By Kids: Songs from Iowa Rock City, Volume One"; and WHEREAS, these partners, along with the album's other co-sponsors, acknowledge the richness of our local music scene; and WHEREAS, participating in music and the arts is beneficial to the development of young people; and WHEREAS, we believe that children are the future, the kids are alright, and we built this City on rock and roll; and WHEREAS, the City of Iowa City's official name contains redundancies and is not sufficiently rocking -enough. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim that Iowa City will be known for a day as Iowa Rock City on Saturday March 28, 2015, the day of a free concert release party at The Englert, featuring local musicians of all ages who contributed to this compilation album, and I encourage the community to support this worthy pursuit. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim April 7th, 2015 to be National Service Recognition Day in Iowa City and encourage residents to recognize the positive impact of national service in our city; to thank those who serve; and to find ways to give back to their communities. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cane second most common cause of cancer deaths for men and women in the United states; and WHEREAS, every 3 minutes, someone is diagnosed with colorectal cancer and every 10 minutes someone dies from colorectal cancer; and WHEREAS, the vast majority of colon cancer deaths can be prevented through proper screening and early detection; and WHEREAS, the survival rate of individuals who have early stage colorectal cancer is 90 percent but is only 10 percent when diagnosed after it has spread to other organs; and WHEREAS, if the majority of people in the United States age 50 or older were screened regularly for colorectal cancer, the death rate from this disease could plummet by up to 70 percent; and WHEREAS, African-Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, American Indians, and Alaskan Natives are significantly less likely to be screened for colorectal cancer compared to Whites; and WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable, and beatable in most cases.
