PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the coining of Spring produces a renewal of interest in tree planting for
beauty, shade, conservation, and many other purposes beneficial to all people; and
Whereas, the observation of Arbor Day has long been characterized by the planting
and preservation of trees; and
Whereas, we hope that the future will see the creation of a better enviromnent through
the use of trees throughout our cities, towns and countryside; and
Whereas, trees in Iowa City beautify our community, increase property values, and
enhance the economic vitality of business areas.
Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim April
24, 2015, to be

in Iowa City, and I hereby urge all citizens to participate in tree planting and preservation
projects throughout the year.

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, April marks the anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act
of 1968, which sought to eliminate discrimination in housing opportunities and
affirmatively further housing choices for all; and
WHEREAS, the ongoing struggle for dignity and housing opportunity for all is not
the exclusive province of the Federal government; and
WHEREAS, vigorous local efforts to combat discrimination can be as effective, if
not more so, than Federal efforts; and
WHEREAS, illegal barriers to equal opportunity in housing, no matter how
subtle, diminish the rights of all.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, pursuit of the
shared goal and responsibility of providing equal housing opportunities for all the City
of Iowa City, does hereby join in the national celebration by proclaiming April, 2015 to
be
FAIR HOUSING MONTH
and encourages all agencies, institutions and individuals, public and private, in Iowa
City to abide by the letter and the spirit of the Fair Housing law.

Whereas, The U.S. hospice movement was founded by dedicated volunteers and the
commitment to volunteering among our nation's hospices continues to this day; and
Whereas, every year more than 1.6 million people in the U.S. coping with a serious,
life -limiting illness receive care from our nation's hospice providers; and
Whereas, more than 355,000 trained volunteers are essential members of hospice care
teams in programs across the country and generously give of their time and talent in
support of the patients and families under their care; and
Whereas, it is estimated that hospice volunteers contribute more than 16 million hours
of service every year; and
Whereas, in our community, the 200 active volunteers of Iowa City Hospice provide
more than 8000 hours of service to ensure that all people find comfort, love and respect at
the end of life's journey; and
Whereas, National Volunteer Week — also celebrating its 40th anniversary — provides
the opportunity to recognize the contributions of caring hospice volunteers and raise
awareness of the benefits of hospice and palliative care.
Now, Therefore, 1, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim April
12-18,2015 as
HOSPICE VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION WEEK
in the city of Iowa City and encourage the support and participation of all citizens.
