EXPERIENCE AND/OR ACTIVITIES WHICH YOU FEEL QUALIFY YOU FOR THIS POSITION:
I retired from M & I Bank, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 2009. 1 served as Sr. Vice President and
Director of Treasury Management Corporate Sales. During my tenure of 17 years, my sales
team grew from 7 to 90 employees and income of $34 million. Much of my job was strategic
planning to ensure we were prepared for the growth that occurred over those years. I know
that I could use those skills on the Board of Trustees Board.
After I moved to the Iowa City area, I joined the Iowa City Library Foundation Board. I will be
completing the second three year term this year. During my time on the Board I was involved in
the strategic planning process, served as Board President for two consecutive years and Board
Treasurer for two consecutive years.
WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD?
Because of the deep connection between the Foundation Board and the Board of Trustees, I
have been very in touch with outcomes of every Trustee meeting. We, the Foundation, walk
hand in hand with the Board of Trustees on raising money for the Library.
REASON FOR APPLYING
I truly love the Iowa City Library. I would love to continue my Board involvement. I could build
on my great experience with the Foundation Board and hopefully help at the Trustee level.
also think I have had great experiences both in my banking career and Board Foundation career
that would be useful.
LIST POTENTIAL CONFLICTS OF INTEREST
I am currently serving my second year as President of Riverside Theatre Board. Next year will
be my last year, as Past President. Riverside does get funding from the City.
For total disclosure I am also on the Board of the Iowa City Noon Rotary, and the
board of I Can Read.

have unavoidable conflicts with the meetings on the 4th Thu of each month. When in IA, my schedule is very flexible.

The Identification of Ainslie
A tale of literary sleuthing inspired by a letter
found in the ACD Collection
AL DAWSON
Al Dawson is a genealogical consultant
and lives in Iowa City, Iowa (a UNESCO -
designated City of Literature.) Mr. Dawson
holds a Master of Arts degree in Victorian
History from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a member
of The Younger Stamfords of Iowa City and
The Bootmakers of Toronto.
THIS RESEARCH WAS INSPIRED by the
SinS Symposium. Many thanks to
Barbara Rusch for drawing me
to Toronto, and to Peggy Perdue
for the tour of the special exhibit Z 4
of items from the Collection,
including the letter from ACD
to Ainslie, written from the
Mena House Hotel in Cairo.
That simple one page
letter fascinated me.
When I got back to # f
my hotel roomy
I went online and learned all I could about
the dozen letters auctioned at Christie's in
2004 — The ACD Collection has two of them.
(See page 6) I started thinking of ways to
determine the identity of the unknown
recipient. Immediately two problems came
to light: "Ainslie" was both a given name and
a surname in Victorian times. In the 1891
census, the one closest to the 1895-96 letters,
there were 828 people with the surname
Ainslie in England, Scotland and Wales.'
Peter Calamai listened politely as I
outlined a few ideas about finding
Ainslie. It is always helpful to
brainstorm at the start of a project,
especially with a pre -banquet
drink in your hand! But the real
work began after I returned home.
Narrowing down the suspects
helped: my search looked for
(a) a male younger than
ACD (Sins reinforced the
notion that ACD would
never write to a woman
as "Dear Ainslie") (b) a
resident of Scotland or
the North of England
and (c) someone
involved in Spiritualism.
These criteria were

"The Three
Correspondents"
as Living History
PETER CALAMAI
Peter Calamai has had a long, distinguished and
honoured career as a correspondent for Canadian
publications both nationally and internationally. He has
a particular interest in the press of Victorian England.
"The Three Correspondents"first appeared in The Windsor
Magazine in October 1896, It is collected in Tales of the
Ring and Camp: The Croxley Master And Other Tales Of
The Ring And Camp, published by John Murray in 1922.
FOR ME CONAN DOYLE'S SHORT STORY"The
Three Correspondents" amounts to living history.
In fewer than 8,000 words Conan Doyle provides
a vivid and highly personal glimpse of a world
which few had the privilege to experience even at
the time and which no one can experience now.
It was the peculiar world of the Special Correspondent
(meaning war correspondent) before instant global
communications, and it has vanished forever.
Not that journalists aren't still coming under fire in
hot spots around the world. Think recently of places
like Afghanistan, Libya and Syria, where many have
suffered much more grievous injuries than the "chip"
off the knee inflicted on Scott of the Courier during the
desert skirmish recounted in Conan Doyle's story,
Yet injuries and deaths among correspondents in such
places are widely known within minutes, sometimes

evidence from the letters. The list of possible
Ainslies, based on the first two criteria, was
now under one hundred individuals.
By the end of October I had looked at
all of these people, utilizing genealogical
resources, but I kept coming back to one
man, Douglas Ainslie. Confession being good
for a sinner, I'll admit that the facts that he
was born in Paris in 1866, lived in a Scottish
castle at age five, and was at Eton at the time
of the 1881 census were mesmerizing to this
researcher! As I added more and more items
to my Douglas Ainslie file I started to feel in
my bones that he was the one. But, as my
graduate advisor in Chapel Hill, all those years
ago, cautioned me: "Feeling it in your bones
is the onset of arthritis! Look for evidence!"
Many sources list 1865 as the year of Douglas
Ainslie's birth. However, in his 1922 memoir,
Adventures Social and Literary, he states that he
was born in Paris on December 16,1866. His
father was Secretary to the British Ambassador.
His mother was also from a diplomatic family,
the Morgans, who had served in Russia. She
was toying with the name of Augustus Grant
Duff (Grant Duff was the family name) when a
telegram arrived from a lawyer, informing the
father -to -be that his maternal uncle, Mr. Douglas
Ainslie had just died. Under the terms of the will
another family tradition: literature. As
a translator, poet and dramatist (as well
as a dramatic critic) Douglas Ainslie
made a small splash in that very large
pond that was late Victorian England.
The importance of Ainslie, however,
was as a connection between a myriad of people
in the Victorian and Edwardian periods, as
well as the years between the two World Wars.
Ainslie was friends with Oscar Wilde, Walter
Pater, Henry James, Somerset Maugham, James
Barrie,Aubrey Beardsley (Douglas contributed
to The Yellow Book), Walter Crane, Sarah
Bernhardt, Edmond Rostand, Herbert
Spencer, Benedetto Croce, Ignacy Jan
Paderewski, Isadora Duncan, Lord
Dunsany, James McNeill Whistler and
Algernon Charles Swinburne. Most
of the people in this list (Barrie is a
notable exception) grace the pages of
Adventures Social and Literary. There
are also lesser-known lights, such as
William Poel and Charles Conder, and s J
rogues like the Marquis of Clanricarde.
But, of course, I was looking $
for Arthur Conan Doyle, and he is c
nowhere to be found in these pages,
written eight years before ACD's '1
death. Douglas Ainslie was perfect
for the recipient of the letters, but
where was the proof? Yes, he was
interested in ghosts and spiritualism;
yes, he travelled extensively, with
diplomatic postings in Berlin, The Hague, and
Paris, as well as trips to Italy, the Far East and
America. What I longed for, however, was to
see him at Mena House in Cairo in 1895.
The researcher trying to unravel a political
mystery is told to "follow the money." For
the genealogist there is a different mantra:
"follow the family!" I spent some time getting
sidetracked by Ainslie's younger brothers, Percy
and Julian (who get dropped into Adventures in
a manner not unlike the first mention of Mycroft
by his brother, Sherlock!) Percy Ainslie was an
author of literature for children, best known
for Bertie Linton, or Lost in Japan. Of Julian we
learn that he was the best shot in the family. I
next tackled Ainslie's father, also a poet — an
investigation that enhanced my knowledge of
Scottish themes. But the father had an older
brother and it was there that I struck gold!
Sir Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant Duff,
Douglas Ainslie's uncle, had been Governor
of Madras from 1881 - 1886. It is clear from
several passages in Adventures, that Ainslie
adored his uncle and considered him one of
the finest of political diarists.' Notes From a
Diary runs to several volumes, and is in the
University of Iowa Library. Grant Duff starts his
last entry for the year 1895 with the following:
My nephew Douglas writes from the Mena
House Hotel close to the Pyramids; - 1 have
been riding lately with Conan Doyle, the
novelist and find him excellent company.'

There are several more mysteries to explore
(such as why the letters had no surviving
envelopes!) but only one that I wish to
examine here. The Secret Life of Oscar Wilde
is an excellent book by Neil McKenna. In it
McKenna identifies Douglas Ainslie as one of
6 THE MAGIC DOOR • FRIENDS OF THE ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE COLLECTION • TORONTO PUBLIC LIBRARY
Oscar Wilde's lovers, based on a letter written
by Wilde to Ainslie, in the spring of 1886,
using certain coded phrases. McKenna states,
"There is no record of how Oscar and Douglas
Ainslie met" S Ainslie tells us that it was, in
fact, through Constance, Wilde's bride: "I had
known her some years before as Miss Lloyd,
and she had come to stay with us at Delgaty,
where I had written verses to her eyes..." 6
There is photographic evidence of this visit
and an expansion of the puppy -love theme of
young Ainslie in a terrific new biography entitled
Constance: The Tragic and Scandalous Life of
Mrs. Oscar Wilde by Franny Moyle. Ms. Moyle
had access to hundreds of unpublished letters
pertaining to Constance. According to Moyle,
young Douglas Ainslie (this was 1882 and he
was 16) was "utterly smitten with Constance,
despite the fact that she was a good eight years
his senior." Douglas wrote a note to Constance,
never delivered, inviting her to his room after
hours! Mrs. Ainslie learned of the note, however,
and Constance was sent back to London .7
I have permission to quote from another
Ainslie letter: one written by Douglas to "my
dear Constance" late in 1884. The letter is in
the Douglas Ainslie Letters, (Collection 703)
Department of Special Collections, Charles E.
Young Research Library, University of California,
Los Angeles. Ainslie came to Southern California
in 1938 to spend his last decade in America. He
died in Los Angeles on March 27,1948.8 The
letter includes this telling phrase: "all I care
about is to know that you do not think I said
any of the numerous things which it appears
to have been the amusement of some people
to circulate concerning you and me. "I So in
1884, prior to the time when McKenna believes
Ainslie and Mr. Wilde were lovers, it appears that
Douglas was more concerned with Mrs. Wilde!
As to Oscar Wilde, Douglas Ainslie has
lots to say, some 20 years after Wilde's death.
Douglas speaks of his luncheons with the
married couple at Tite Street and then mentions
hearing the rumors of Oscar's "unpleasant
nature." "Anything of that sort has always been
inexpressibly shocking and distasteful to me..."
and Douglas therefore dropped the connection
with the Wildes. "It is easy enough for perfectly
normal people, like the present writer, and
ninety-nine hundreds of the community to
blame those afflicted in the manner of poor
Wilde..."writes Ainslie, who hoped that medical
help, rather than legal penalties, would be the
answer.10 The 21st Century North American
reader has to smile at the 99% reference.
Perhaps I am being naive in believing
these passages, written towards the end of
his career, when Ainslie was 56. Perhaps I
will have a different view after I go to UCLA
and read his other letters. But, for now, I
lean towards the view that, whatever his
sexual orientation might have been, Douglas
Ainslie was not a panther at Wilde's feast.
In 1908 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a short
story entitled `A Pot of Caviare" set during the
Boxer Rebellion in China. One of the people
trapped in the siege was "young Ainslie, of the
diplomatic service.."" Another Ainslie has been
trapped inside twelve letters for 116 years.
The process of his liberation has begun!

Tlte,i tn,igma of First Cousin Marriages
By A 2awson
Two Later 20th Century Michigan Marriages
In 1965 a woman from Benton Harbor wrote to
Ann Landers:
"I married my first cousin and we have six
bright, healthy children. My brother married
a girl he met in Europe during the war. They
have four of the nuttiest kids I ever saw."
Putting aside the subjective opinion of her broth-
er's off -spring, the reason for this lady's letter was
that the famous advice columnist had dared to ques-
tion the conventional wisdom of the taboo on first
cousin marriages, and, in Ann's own words: "started
a real donnybrook."'
First cousin marriages have always been a prob-
lem for some genealogists. I suspect it is one of the
many reasons some people decide not to post their
trees online. It is fairly hard to hide a first cousin
marriage when you suddenly realize that one set of
grandparents is the same! I'll state from the outset
that I have several first cousin marriages in my own
tree.
There are more serious issues for Michigan re-
searchers who examine first cousin marriages, as
they have been illegal in the state since 1846. By un-
derstanding the law pertaining to these marriages,
you might be able to explain previously inexplicable
actions of your ancestors: second weddings, out-of-
state weddings or sudden migrations to other loca-
tions.
Revised Statutes of 1846 (EXCERPT)
Chapter 83. Of marriage and the solemnization
thereof. 551.3 Incapacity; persons man prohibited
from marrying.
Sec. 3.
A man shall not marry his mother, sis-
ter, grandmother, daughter, granddaughter,
stepmother, grandfather's wife, son's wife,
grandson's wife, wife's mother, wife's grand-
mother, wife's daughter, wife's granddaugh-
ter, brother's daughter, sister's daughter, fa-
ther's sister, mother's sister, or cousin of the
first degree, or another man.'
There follows a similar section, written specifically
for the prospective bride.
So what about going across the border to Ontario?
Yes, that would have been an option, as there were
numerous restrictions, but they did not included first
cousin marriages. In fact, Canada's first Prime Min-
ister, John A. Macdonald, married his first cousin,
Isabella Clark, in 1843. She was actually his half first
cousin, as they had the same maternal grandmother.
In Ontario, after 1897, there was a form that I have
seen attached to a 1911 Ontario marriage:
Degrees of AFFINITY and CONSANGUINITY
which under The Marriage Act, Chapter 162 Revised
Statutes of Ontario, 1897, and Cap. 23, z Edward VII,
bar the lawful solemnization of Marriage:
A MAN may not marry his

EXPERIENCE AND/OR ACTIVITIES WHICH YOU FEEL QUALIFY YOU FOR THIS POSITION:.'.
II feel I would bring a genuine passion to the position of a board member because of my love for the library. My
experience as a pharmaceutical sales representative, clerk, and mother of five children. As a sales representative, I
worked on several committees such as advisory board for several products, and the launch of products. I also
worked on the diversity action council. As a clerk, I interact with people from all walks of life. As a mother of five
.ids, I have been involved with organizing, planning and participating in all programs at their schools. We have
1particicpated in summer reading programs, volunteering, and tutoring offered through the Iowa City Public Library.
WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD?
i present knowledge of the advisory board is that the primary goal is to connect with people from all backgrounds to
ucate, connect, engage, and enrich the lives of everyone in the community. They haved achieved this goal through
rveys, programs, fundraisers, and technology. I hope to bring my experience, ideas and passion to this board and
improve all aspects of the library experience.
WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS CAN YOU MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD (REASON FOR APPLYING)?
The reason I am applying for the Iowa City public library advisory board is to bring more diversity to the board that I
hope would appeal to different groups and ultimmately bring more people to the library from diverse backgrounds.
My goal as a member of the board would be to touch and engage everyone in the community. Again, my family and
I have used the library for all the years that we have lived in Iowa City. They were raised in the ICPL.
LIST POTENTIAL CONFLICTS OF INTEREST: See page 1 for information regarding Conflict of Interest
I do not forsee any potential conflict of interest with me being a part of or serving on the advisory board.
