CITY OF IOWA CITY
UNESCO CITY OF LITERATURE
CITY OF IOWA CITY
MEMORANDUM
Date: April 30, 2015
To: City Council
From: Carol Sweeting, Public Works Public Education and Volunteer Coordinator
Re: Certificates of recognition for University of Iowa REACH students
Linda Schrieber is a Master Gardener who for several years has worked alongside the City of Iowa City
horticulturist and volunteered her time and expertise on garden beautification projects in the
Downtown Iowa City area. Her work with perennial plants in gardens, flower beds, and other growing
spaces sets the foundation for the City's garden -planting projects, which are complemented with
plantings of annual flowers each spring by City staff.

As part of her volunteer efforts, she has enlisted the help of University of Iowa REACH students for the
past several growing seasons. REACH is a two-year, transition certificate program for students with
multiple intellectual, cognitive, and learning disabilities. The program provides a campus experience
which includes courses and career preparation to empower young adults to reach their full potential and
become independent, engaged members of the community.
Last fall, participation by the REACH students reached a new level as they became more heavily involved
in the Downtown garden beautification program. Linda and I worked with students on a weekly basis,
where they learned about numerous types of plants and plant growth, and helped prepare the gardens
for fall and winter. Eight students not only worked in existing gardens, they also created brand new
garden spaces and planted hundreds of daffodil bulbs. They became strong advocates for the garden
program, enlisting support from Downtown businesses and encouraging retail shopkeepers to display
"IC Blooms" signs in their windows to support their garden beautification efforts.
As a result of their work, the University of Iowa REACH Students have been recognized and honored
with a 2015 Iowa Master Gardeners Search for Excellence Award, which is presented each year to Iowa
gardeners who demonstrate outstanding contributions to their communities. At the Council meeting,
we would like to present these students with certificates of recognition for their achievements and
thank them for their hard work and dedication, the partnerships they have helped build within our
community, and the beautiful spaces they have helped create in Downtown Iowa City. Our thanks,
appreciation, and high praise go to:
