HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-06-16 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Juneteenth National Freedom Day celebrates the day of June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger led Union soldiers into Galveston, Texas, bringing news that the Civil War had ended and that the Emancipation Proclamation declared all slaves to be free; and WHEREAS, in Texas and throughout the South, Juneteenth celebrations began on June 19th of each year — consisting of prayer services, inspirational speeches, readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, food, games, and dances; and WHEREAS, in 1997, during the 105th US Congress, House Joint Resolution 56 and Senate Joint Resolution 11 were passed, officially recognizing Juneteenth as the Independence Day Observance of Americans of African descent; and WHEREAS, Juneteenth reflects our community's deep belief in liberty and equality for all individuals, as all benefit from a greater understanding and appreciation of the experiences of others; and WHEREAS, Juneteenth commemorates the, strength and resolve of African- Americans throughout our history, and is an opportunity to celebrate African-American culture, art, history, and achievement; and WHEREAS, "Celebrating Juneteenth: Commemorating the End of Slavery", a community celebration with games, activities, food, and prizes as well as a health and financial wellness fair, will be held at Robert A. Lee Recreational Center, 220 S. Gilbert Street, on June 27, 2015, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby recognize June 19, 2015 to be Juneteenth National Freedom Day in Iowa City, and I call this observance to the attention of all community members. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed on July 26, 1990, to ensure the civil rights of individuals with disabilities; and Whereas, Iowa City, Iowa, affirms the principals of equality and inclusion for persons with disabilities as set forth for the State of Iowa and embodied in the ADA, the laws of the State of Iowa, and ordinances of Iowa City; and Whereas, numerous organizations in Iowa City work with constituents and communities to bring forth the promise of hope and freedom that is envisioned by the passage of the ADA; and Whereas, July 25, 2015, celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act; and Whereas, on July 25, 2015, a Johnson County ADA celebration event, "Celebrating 25 Years of Removing Barriers and Empowering People," will be held at the Iowa City Ped Mall from 11 a.m. — 2p.m. Now, therefore, 1, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, proclaim July 25, 2015, as Americans with Disabilities Act Awareness Day and urge community members to participate in activities that celebrate and honor the spirit of the act.
