HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-07-27 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, as many as five million Americans are now living with Alzheimer's disease and someone new is added to those ranks every 67 seconds; and Whereas, Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States; and Whereas, it is important that the people of Iowa City know that by 2025 the number of people with Alzheimer's in the United States will increase by 40% to over seven million people; and Whereas, researchers are close to developing accurate ways to diagnose Alzheimer's and treat the disease; and Whereas, the Alzheimer's Association is here today, encouraging Iowa City businesses and residents to join the fight against this devastating disease by decorating their storefronts and spaces with purple as well as to wear purple to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease; and Whereas, it is appropriate that a day be set aside to encourage residents to take steps to act now and to end Alzheimer's, open their minds to learn the facts about Alzheimer's. Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, proclaim July 31, 2015, as PAINT THE TOWN PURPLE FOR ALZHEIMER'S DAY and urge community members to voice their support and become an advocate and move the Alzheimer's Association's cause forward.
