PROCLAMATION
VV 1XIV 1\L` S, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we recognize the
significant achievements we have made in reducing domestic violence in America; and
WHEREAS, despite tremendous progress, an average of three women in America die
as a result of domestic violence each day and one in four women and one in thirteen men
will experience domestic violence in their lifetime; and
WHEREAS, these statistics are even more sobering when we consider that domestic
violence often goes unreported; and
WHEREAS, exposure to domestic violence puts our young men and women in danger
of long-term physical, psychological, and emotional harm; and
WHEREAS, children who experience domestic violence are at a higher risk for
failure in school, emotional disorders, and substance abuse, and are more likely to
perpetuate the cycle of violence themselves later in life; and
WHEREAS, a coalition of organizations, law enforcement officials, those involved
with shelters and hotline services, health care providers, the clergy and other concerned
citizens are helping in the effort to end domestic violence and have emerged to directly
confront this crisis.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby join
governments across the country to proclaim the month of October, 2015 as:
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
and urge all citizens to recognize this month by becoming aware of the tragedy of
domestic violence, recognizing the compassion and dedication of volunteers and
nrofessionals to increase public understanding of this difficult problem; and supporting
victims and those who are working toward its end.
