•-!,lb CITY OF IOWA CITY
MEMORANDUM
Date: October 13, 2015
To: Tom Markus, City Manager
From: John Grier, Fire Chief, 4
Re: Lifesaver Award Presentation
10-20-15
The department Awards Review Committee met recently to review a nomination for the
Lifesaver Award. The Lifesaver Award is presented to fire department personnel who have
performed the exceptional act of saving another person's life.
On July 10, 2015, Shift B crews responded to a garage fire with a report of an individual trapped
inside and shouting for help. Personnel assigned to E11 and E1 worked together to gain
access, attack the fire and effect the rescue of the male victim who was trapped in the garage.
Unquestionably, the victim survived due to the quick thinking actions and teamwork of the crews
involved.
Following a review of the facts of the incident, the committee unanimously recommended
awarding the Lifesaver Award to the following department members:
Firefighter Thomas Hartshorn
Firefighter Ryan Haxmeier
Firefighter Mery Miller
Firefighter Glenn Pauley
Firefighter Timothy Recker
Firefighter Andrew Wulfekuhle
I agree with the committee recommendation and respectfully request each aforementioned
member be presented the Lifesaver Award commendation bar and certificate of meritorious
exceptional performance at the October 20, 2015 City Council meeting.
