PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, workplaces welcoming of the talents of all people, including
people with disabilities, are a critical part of our efforts to build an inclusive
community and strong economy; and
WHEREAS, in this spirit, the City of Iowa City wants to raise awareness about
disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of
people with disabilities to our communities and to affirm Iowa City's
commitment to an inclusive community.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby
proclaim October 2015 as
National Disability Employment
Awareness Month
in doing so I call upon employers, schools and other community organizations in
Iowa City to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities, and to
advance its important message that people with disabilities are equal to the task
throughout the year.

Proclamation
WHEREAS, the City of Iowa City is committed to ensuring the safe�y a��u �ccun�y
of all those living in and visiting our city; and
WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and
homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and
WHEREAS, between the hours of 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM are the peak alarm times
for fire deaths—when people tend to be asleep; and
WHEREAS, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths in the United States resulted
from fires in homes with inoperable smoke alarms or no smoke alarms; and
WHEREAS, the designation of a special day to remind residents of Iowa City to
change the batteries in their smoke alarms, timed to coincide with the fall ritual of
changing clocks, would greatly diminish the chance of this tragedy occurring in Iowa
City; and
WHEREAS, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years; and
WHEREAS, November 1 st, 2015 is the day the citizens of Iowa City change their
clocks from daylight savings time to standard time.
NOW, THEREFORE, I Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Iowa City presented its charter on November 4, 1915
when 30 local business and professional men and university officials gathered to celebrate
the culmination of the process of incorporation; and
WHEREAS, the 1915 event had special significance, in part, because the founder of
Rotary International, Paul Harris, was an 1891 graduate of the University of Iowa Law
School; and
WHEREAS, several hundred men and women from a broad range of professions now
meet each week as part of the Iowa City Rotary Club, and hear featured speakers of
national and international renown including six Rotary International presidents and Paul
Harris himself, who attended the club meeting in 1938; and
WHEREAS, members are understandably proud of the club's long tradition of
"Service Above Self'. That motto has been reflected by the involvement and the efforts
of club members in humanitarian programs locally and globally; and
WHEREAS, the Iowa City Rotary Club, through monetary support and hands-on
effort, has assisted Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House and
Rotary Camp Park among others.
NOW, THERFORE,1, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
November 2015 as
ROTARY MONTH
in Iowa City and acknowledge the efforts of the Iowa City Rotary in supporting programs
and scholarships locally and internationally that lead to international good will and
understanding and more peaceful conflict resolution.
