PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Mayor Hayek has served the City of Iowa City with distinction as a Councilmember for
eight years and as Mayor for six; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Hayek has further demonstrated his commitment to public service as a Peace
Corps volunteer in Bolivia, Chair of the Housing and Community Development Commission and
Scattered Site Housing Task Force, President of the Englert Board of Directors, and distinguished
Shimek Elementary safety patrol officer; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Hayek has been recognized for his community commitment as a recipient of the
Iowa State Bar Association's Pro Bono Award for extensive legal work on behalf of less fortunate Iowans
and as a teenage recipient of the Governor's Certificate of Lifesaving (otherwise known in the Hayek
family as Matt's get out of jail free card); and
WHEREAS, the Hayek family came to Iowa City with the first generations of settlers in the mid
nineteenth century and has served the community for generations; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Hayek's steady leadership helped guide the City through the challenges of flood
recovery, straight line wind damages, downtown fires and water main breaks, passage of the 21 bar
ordinance, and the most recent City Hall renovation project; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Hayek's accomplishments are all the more impressive when one considers that he
was four years old when City Manager Tom Markus began his career in city administration; and
WHEREAS, research into the controversial Shimek Squirrels mascot debacle has revealed that it may
have been an attempt by administrators to tamp down the aggressiveness of a certain student. It didn't
work - he became a professional shark anyway; and
WHEREAS, despite the fact that Mayor Hayek did not necessarily light the world on fire on the
gridiron at City High, surely if he were graduating high school today he would be receiving multiple
recruitment letters from the Michigan Wolverines second-rate football team; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Hayek is the greatest foosball player of all time (ok... we get it).
NOW THEREFORE, I, Susan Mims, Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Iowa City, hereby declare
December 15, 2015 as
Matt Hayek Day
in the City of Iowa City, recognizing the Mayor's immense contributions to our community. So, Matt,
you are free to stick around for the rest of the meeting or ao home and do homework.
ayor Pro Tem
Signed in Iowa City, Iowa,
