HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-02-16 Proclamation2 6-1611 3a City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, much of the history of Iowa City's honor, strength and stature can be attributed to the diversity of cultures and traditions that are celebrated by the residents of this great community; and Whereas, African Americans have played significant roles in the history of Iowa City and the state of Iowa's economic, cultural, spiritual and political development while working tirelessly to maintain and promote their culture and history; and Whereas, Black History Month was formally adopted to honor and affirm the importance of Black History throughout our American experience; and Whereas, during Black History Month all are encouraged to reflect on past successes and challenges of African Americans and look to the future to continue to improve society so that we live up to the ideals of freedom, equality and justice; Now, Therefore, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor, do hereby proclaim the month of February 2016 to be Black History Month in Iowa City, and urge all public officials, educators and members of the community to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities. Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 16 th day of February, City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Sertoma International, a civic organization, the motto of which is "Service to Mankind," has adopted a Freedom Week program dedicated to the emphasis of the values and responsibilities of people in a democracy, and WHEREAS, Sertoma International has promoted the distribution of copies of the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence throughout its entire membership of Clubs, and WHEREAS, the Old Capitol Sertoma Club supports Freedom Week through its National Heritage Essay Contest, an essay contest for eighth Grade students in Johnson County designed to emphasize and educate students on our government and the responsibilities of citizens in a democracy, and WHEREAS, it seems proper and fitting to accord official recognition to Sertoma's Freedom Week. NOW, Therefore, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the week of February 22nd , 2016 to be SER TOMA'S FREEDOM WEEK in Iowa City and urge the community to support the objectives of this program.
