Author and Community Expert Jay Walljasper to Visit Iowa City and the University of Iowa April 13
April 1, 2016
Jay Walljasper, author/editor of All That We Share: A Field Guide to the Commons (New Press,
2010), will visit Iowa City and the University of Iowa on Wednesday, April 13, and make two
presentations. At 3:30, Walljasper will conduct a talk and discussion entitled "All That We Share: A
Discussion of the Commons" in the Senate Chamber of the Old Capitol Museum on the University of
Iowa campus. At 5:30, he will present a workshop entitled "25 Ways You Can Create a Strong
Community" in the Assembly Room of the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center (28 S. Linn St.). Both
events are free and open to the public.
The 3:30 event will focus on a discussion of the commons. According to OntheCommons.org,
which Walljasper co -edits, "The commons is a new way to express a very old idea—that some forms of
wealth belong to all of us, and that these community resources must be actively protected and managed
for the good of all. The commons are the things that we inherit and create jointly, and that will
(hopefully) last for generations to come. The commons consists of gifts of nature such as air, oceans,
and wildlife as well as shared social creations such as libraries, public spaces, scientific research, and
creative works."
The 5:30 workshop will focus on placemaking and the commons, with an emphasis on
community development here in Iowa City, especially in the downtown area. Walljasper will make a
presentation of shining examples from around the world of how people have improved their
community, emphasizing everyday people living in everyday places. Issues will include inclusiveness,
walkability, community ownership and stewardship of public spaces, and more. The session will include
a brainstorming session addressing audience members' "nearest and dearest" places or characteristics
of Iowa City, as well as everyone's thoughts on what the city's most significant challenges are. The
intent is to help the community imagine and move toward a brighter future.
A popular speaker, award-winning writer, veteran communications specialist, and leading
authority on community issues, Jay Walljasper is a University of Iowa alumnus, having earned his
Bachelor of Arts in journalism and English from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University
of Iowa in 1976. He was also a writer and editor for the Daily Iowan.
Walljasper is the author of All That We Share: A Field Guide to the Commons (2010), The Great
Neighborhood Book (2007), and Visionaries: People and Ideas to Change Your Life (2001), along with the
e -book How to Design Our World for Happiness (2013). Walljasper is Urban Writer -in -Residence at
Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Senior Fellow at Project for Public Spaces, and editor of the online
Commons magazine, available at the Onthecommons.org website. Walljasper served as editor of Utne
Reader magazine for many years and also as travel editor at Better Homes & Gardens, executive editor
at Netherlands -based Ode magazine, and contributing editor at National Geographic Traveler. His
articles have been published in numerous national and international newspapers, magazines, and
websites, including the Christian Science Monitor, The New Statesman (London), Huffington Post, the
San Francisco Chronicle, Mother Jones, the Toronto Star, Planning magazine, and The Nation.
The many audiences Walljasper has addressed include the UNESCO International Conference on
Creative Tourism, the Bioneers conference on green solutions, and other symposia, conferences, and
workshops in cities such as Edmonton, Winnipeg, Boise, Portland, St. Paul, and Boston, as well as at the
Great Places Conference sponsored by the state of Iowa. Among his many college campus lectures,
Walljasper has spoken previously at the University of Iowa and Grinnell College, and he delivered the
annual Meredith Lecture on Communications at Drake University in Des Moines.
Walljasper's visit is co-sponsored by the City of Iowa City, the Iowa City Downtown District, the
University of Iowa Just Living Theme Semester through the Office of Outreach and Engagement, the UI
Public Policy Center, and the UI School of Urban and Regional Planning.
The Just Living Theme Semester (justliving.uiowa.edu) focuses on the topic of social justice with
the goal to explore values, beliefs, and positioning by examining our past and looking to our future. The
Just Living Student Ambassadors will be at both events to share information about the theme semester
and to collect general donations for the VA Hospital in Iowa City. Attendees are encouraged to bring an
item to donate. To view their needs, visit http://bit.ly//VAdonations.
Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa sponsored events. If
you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation in order to participate in this
program, please contact Thomas Dean in the Office of the President in advance at 319-335-1995.
