PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary is conducting its 102"d year of
volunteer service to America; and
WHEREAS, year after year the organization continues to honor those who have made
the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom by maintaining memorials to their service
and sharing their history with our nation's youth so that what our nation's veterans have
done for America will not be forgotten; and
WHEREAS, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary supports the troops currently
deployed overseas; and
WHEREAS, the 465,000 members represent the families of those who have served or
are currently on foreign soil protecting our freedom; and
WHEREAS, members volunteer nearly 1 million hours in Veterans Affairs Medical
Centers and other hospitals throughout this country; and
WHEREAS, the organization provides awards and scholarships to students based on
their expressions of patriotism through art, speech and volunteerism; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby
proclaim that in April we celebrate
"Our Veterans — Now and Forever"
to honor National President Francisca Guilford, and all members of the VFW Auxiliary
for their outstanding volunteer service to veterans and their families.

Whereas, the bicycle is an economical, environmentally sound, and effective means of
transportation, recreation, and fitness; and
Whereas, the bicycle is considered a legitimate vehicle in all 50 states and is entitled
to gal and responsible use of all public roads in Iowa, except interstate highways;
and
Whereas, increased use of the bicycle will benefit all citizens by improving air quality,
reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing use of and dependence upon finite
energy resources and will foster healthy lifestyles; and
Whereas, the City of Iowa City has an ongoing commitment to encourage bicycling as
a viable mode of transportation and recreation; and
Whereas, May 16-20 has been declared Johnson County Bike to Work Week, and
the City of Iowa City supports bicycling to work; and
Whereas, the League of American Bicyclists has established the month of May as
National Bicycle Month.
Now, therefore, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby

beauty, shade, conservation, and many other purposes beneficial to all people; and
Whereas, the observation of Arbor Day has long been characterized by the planting
and preservation of trees; and
Whereas, we hope that the future will see the creation of a better environment through
the use of trees throughout our cities, towns and countryside; and
Whereas, trees in Iowa City beautify our community, increase property values, and
enhance the economic vitality of business areas.
