General Application April 2015 Page 3 of 7 Marian Karr From: Sent: To: Subject: Dear City Council, Vero Rose Smith <verorose.smith@gmail.com> Friday, February 26, 2016 10:51 PM Council Application for Historic Preservation Commission I write to you as a hopeful new member of the Historic Preservation Commission. As a recent graduate from Harvard University Graduate School of Design and a recent alumna of the University of Iowa (from which I graduated with a master's degree in architectural history), I am fully qualified to serve on this commission. Through a combination of coursework, academic research, and professional experience, I have become a passionate advocate for the preservation of historic built environments. In particular, I am interested in adaptive re -use of historic structures. Much of my professional non-profit experience has centered on historic preservation and creative reclamation of older buildings. For example, during my time as Executive Director at Old Brick in Iowa City, I received a fellowship through the Obermann Center at the University of Iowa to further explore the history of the building and create a public tour of the space. More recently, as Director of The Democracy Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts I launched an interior design competition geared towards re -imagining the events center, which is housed in a building at least two centuries old. Both initiatives sought to engage the public in creative decision-making that focused on community building through celebrating history. By serving on this commission, I hope to simultaneously advance social and environmental justice initiatives while preserving architectural character and heritage. I believe that the only hope for a environmentally sustainable and socially just future lies in the preservation of and respect for the past. When Charlie told me of his interest to serve on the Housing and Community Development Commission I encouraged him to apply. I have known Charlie for 6 years and have worked with him on several committees. Whether it be his outstanding work on the Iowa City Zoning Board serving as chair for several years, chairing the Consultation of Religious Communities, on the board of the Center for Worker Justice, and on the Iowa City Community School District Equity Committee, Charlie does the homework, asks thought-provoking questions, is responsible and follows through on committments he takes on. Charlie has relentless energy when it comes to issues of social justice. I see Charlie as an asset to our city and know he will be committed and involved if appointed to the Iowa City Housing and Community Development Commission I highly recommend him and look forward to working with him.
