HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-07-19 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, as many as five million Americans are now living with Alzheimer's disease and someone new is added to those ranks every 66 seconds; and Whereas, Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, the only leading cause of death without a prevention or a cure; and Whereas, it is important that the people of Iowa City know that in 2015 alone more than 15 million care partners gave an estimated 18.1 billion hours of unpaired care costing them over $5,000; and Whereas, researchers are working diligently to develop accurate ways to diagnose and treat Alzheimer's disease; and Whereas, the Alzheimer's Association is here today, encouraging Iowa City businesses and residents to join the fight against this devastating disease by decorating their storefronts and spaces with purple as well as to wear purple to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease; and Whereas, it is appropriate that a day be set aside to encourage residents to take steps to act now and to end Alzheimer's, open their minds to learn the facts about Alzheimer's, voice their support, and become an advocate to move the Alzheimer's Association's mission forward.
