HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-09-06 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, in the state of Iowa, suicide is the 9th leading cause of all deaths and the 2nd leading cause of death among people from the ages of 15 to 44; and WHEREAS, 407 Iowans died by suicide in 2014, and several thousand friends and family members were changed forever by losing those people; and WHEREAS, in the United States, one person dies by suicide every 12.8 minutes, with 42,773 deaths by suicide in our country during 2014 and most of these deaths are preventable; and WHEREAS, the Johnson County Suicide Prevention Coalition, dedicated to reducing the frequency of suicide attempts and deaths and the pain of those affected by suicides of loved ones, urges that we: 1. Recognize suicide as a significant public health problem in Iowa and declare suicide prevention to be a priority; 2. Support the development of accessible behavioral health services for all 99 counties of our State, implementing national best practices in reducing suicide risk for people of all ages and backgrounds; 3. Acknowledge that no single suicide prevention program or effort will be sufficient or appropriate for all populations or communities; 4. Encourage initiatives based on the goals and activities of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, Zero Suicide of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention, and the Johnson County Suicide Prevention Coalition. NOW, THEREFORE, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby designate September 5-11, 2016, to be SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK in Iowa City, Iowa, and encourage residents to learn how they can help, because Suicide Prevention Is Everyone's Business.
