Now, therefore, 1, James A. Mayor Signed in Io City, Iowa, this 4`s day of qctober, 2016 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, more than 30 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly took an important step in promoting the idea that everyone deserves a decent place to live by declaring that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day; and Whereas, on Monday, Oct. 3, 2016, Habitat for Humanityjoins with our partners around the world to rededicate ourselves to recognizing the basic right of everyone to adequate shelter; and Whereas, Habitat for Humanity asks everyone to join together as one global network in communicating the message that every one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future; and Whereas, recognizing that a decent place to live can remove barriers to opportunity, health and success that might have been part of a family's life for years, and in many cases for generations; and Whereas, driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity has grown from a grassroots effort that began on a community farm in southern Georgia in 1976 to a global nonprofit housing organization in nearly 1,400 communities across the U.S. and in over 70 countries; and Whereas, people partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Now, Therefore, I, James A. Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim NESS WEEK tsing, everyone can help need to build better lives for Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 4th day of October, 2016 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the city of Iowa City is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting Iowa City; and WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and WHEREAS, home fires killed 2,860 people in the United States in 2014, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and fire departments in the United States responded to 366,698 home fires; and WHEREAS, working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half and three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms; and WHEREAS, half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep; and WHEREAS, Iowa City first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and WHEREAS, Iowa City residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire, especially in their homes; and WHEREAS, the 2016 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Don't Wait — Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years" effectively serves to remind us that we need working smoke alarms to give us the time to get out safely. NOW, THEREFORE, I, James A. Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa this 4"' day of October, 2016 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking affects women, children and men of all racial, cultural and economic backgrounds, causing long-term physical, psychological and emotional harm; and Whereas, one in three Americans have witnessed an incident of domestic violence; and Whereas, children who experience domestic violence are at a higher risk for failure in school, mental illness, substance abuse, suicide, and may choose violence as a way to solve problems later in life; and Whereas, domestic violence in rural communities exists as a hidden, silent and often unrecognized crime that is often underreported; and Whereas, through the inspiration, courage and persistence of victims of domestic violence, their children and advocates, our communities are learning to recognize the impact of violence in the home and intimate relationships; and Whereas, the Domestic Violence Intervention Program has worked to end violence in intimate relationships for more than 37 years through the collaborative partnerships of advocates, volunteers, local municipalities, criminal justice, health and human services, faith communities, business leaders and private citizens; and Whereas, our community's achievements should be commended, we must continue our commitment to respect and support victims of domestic violence and to prevent future violence in our community.
