PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the United Nations was founded at the end of World War II to try t_
together a world devastated by war and injustice, and
Whereas, the United Nations continues to provide a forum for countries to work
together for security and development, to make progress toward combating disease,
hunger, and poverty, to support action to combat climate change, and to encourage quality
education for all; and
Whereas, toward these ends, the United Nations has recently adopted the following
seventeen Sustainable Development Goals for 2030: (1) No poverty, (2) Zero hunger, (3)
Good health and wellbeing, (4) Quality education, (5) Gender equality, (6) Clean water
and sanitation, (7) Affordable and clean energy, (8) Decent work and economic growth,
(9) Industry, innovation and infrastructure, (10) Reduced inequalities, (11) Sustainable
cities and communities, (12) Responsible consumption and production, (13) Climate
action, (14) Life below water, (15) Life on land, (16) Peace, justice and strong
institutions, and (17) Partnerships for the goals; and
Whereas, the United Nations works through a variety of agencies to provide
peacekeepers in war -ravaged areas, to support refugees from wars and discrimination, and
to encourage international cooperation; and
Whereas, the United Nations promotes values and practices cherished by Iowans
including respect for life, the peaceful resolution of conflict, assistance to those in need,
human dignity, and self-government.
Now, Therefore, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
October 24, 2016 to be
UNITED NATIONS DAY
and encourage everyone to join in observing this day and focusing on the vision of a
world filled with peace and justice, brought about by the cooperation of all nations.

those with disabilities, as a critical part of our efforts to build an inclusive community
and strong economy; and
WHEREAS, Iowa City wishes to raise awareness about disability employment and
celebrate the many contributions to our communities and affirm Iowa City's
commitment to an inclusive community; and
WHEREAS, Iowa City is recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness
Month this October.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby
proclaim October 2016 to be
National Disability Employment Awareness
Month
to highlight the benefits of disabilities in the workplace, the Center for Disabilities
& Development, the Iowa City Human Rights Commission, and Iowa Vocational
Rehabilitation will be sponsoring a complimentary workshop for local employers
on Thursday, November 3.
