HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-11-01 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, American Indians and Alaska Natives have profoundly shaped our country's character and our cultural heritage, today Native Americans are still leaders in every aspect of our society and have faced moments of profound triumph and tragedy alike; and WHEREAS, our debt to the First Americans is immense, as is our responsibility to ensure their fair, equal treatment and to honor the commitments we made to their forebears; and WHEREAS, we celebrate and honor the many ways they have enriched our Nation, and we renew our commitment to respecting each tribe's identity while ensuring equal opportunity to pursue the American dream. NOW, THEREFORE, I, James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim November 2016 to be National Native American Heritage Month and call upon all to commemorate this month with appropriate programs and activities celebrating Native American ancestry and their time honored traditions. Signed in Iowa City, Iow this I' day of November, 2016 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the City of Iowa City is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our city; and WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and WHEREAS, between the hours of 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM are the peak alarm times for fire deaths—when people tend to be asleep; and WHEREAS, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths in the United States resulted from fires in homes with inoperable smoke alarms or no smoke alarms; and WHEREAS, the designation of a special day to remind residents of Iowa City to change the batteries in their smoke alarms, timed to coincide with the fall ritual of changing clocks, would greatly diminish the chance of this tragedy occurring in Iowa City; and WHEREAS, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years; and WHEREAS, November 6th, 2016 is the day the citizens of Iowa City change their clocks from daylight savings time to standard time. NOW, THEREFORE, I James A. Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim November 6, 2016 to be Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery Day in Iowa City and urge all residents to change their smoke alarm batteries and install new smoke alarms and to replace smoke alarms if they are ten years old or older. /L. l 7 yor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa this I' day of November, 2016.
