HomeMy WebLinkAboutCemetery SupervisorCITY OF IOWA CITY - Job Description Job Class #27-14 FLSA Exempt Non Civil Service Identification Position Title: Cemetery Supervisor Department: Parks & Recreation Division: Cemetery Supervisor: Parks & Recreation Director Job Summary Under direction, supervises and directs work crews, and participates in the operation and maintenance of the City’s Oakland Cemetery and related areas. Job Scope Directly supervises two employees, plus others on occasion. Prepares and administers the annual budget for the division. Monitors expenditures during the year and makes recommendations for budget modifications or additional funds. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Develops, maintains and coordinates policies for the operation of the division. Listens and responds to complaints, suggestions and ideas from the general public regarding division activities. Supervises and participates in year round maintenance of cemetery grounds, buildings and other assigned areas. Interviews and hires permanent and hourly employees. Supervises, trains and evaluates work performance of assigned crews; disciplines as necessary. Prepares division budget and monitors expenditures; reviews and approves operating expenditures. Prepares and recommends cost estimates for capital improvement projects; serves as project manager when assigned. Maintains cemetery grounds and other related areas including construction, cement work, plumbing, electrical work and carpentry. Provides for or performs repairs and maintenance of equipment, small tractors and attachments, gas powered lawn mowers, cord trimmers and edgers and chain saws. Operates light and heavy trucks and tractors with a variety of attachments. Directs and assists with internments and disinternments; prepares graves, sets up tents and chairs Job Class #27-14 Cemetery Page 2 Updated 8/30/2016 and ASSEMBLES equipment for graveside services. Shows and sells burial plots; maintains computerized records of lot sales, burials and location of burials; assists public with deed transactions and lot repurchases. Receives funeral service information from funeral directors or family members; answers inquiries regarding general funeral services operations. Maintains proper records regarding personnel, purchases, projects, safety, etc. Maintains job records and prepares reports as required. Removes snow and ice and distributes salt and sand on cemetery roads, sidewalks and several other bridges and walks in assigned areas. Responds to requests for family history information. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Performs all other related duties as assigned. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. Employee may be exposed to moving traffic and potential mechanical, chemical and electrical hazards. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification High school diploma or equivalent required. A minimum of two years responsible supervisory experience in community park, cemetery or grounds management required. Iowa Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification required within six months of appointment. Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check. Job Class #27-14 Cemetery Page 3 Updated 8/30/2016 Preferred Education, Experience and Certification Three years of experience in grounds maintenance preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to make analytical decisions based on department policy standards. Knowledge of general construction methods including basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical construction, and landscaping. Knowledge of turf and ground maintenance. Knowledge of cemetery rules and regulations. Skills in operating and maintaining heavy and light equipment used in cemetery maintenance. Skills in the use of hand and power tools. Ability to read and comprehend maps, City ordinances, and equipment manuals. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and measurements. Ability to use a computer. Ability to maintain computerized daily records and prepare written reports. Skills in scheduling, assigning and supervising the work of subordinates.
